Like the title says, I am looking to replaces a friends old computer with a new AMD XP system:
Onboard Raid is not necessary.
Onboard Sound and video are not necessary.
Onboard Lan is not necessary.
I need advice as to which chipset and which specific mobos using these chipsets are the best with regard to the following:
Supperior Stability?
Ease of setup?
Future Upgradability regarding support for 333fsb with a 1/5 divider now, and support for the new AMD 333 cpu's?
Onboard USB 2.0?
Which have the best onboard sound?
Medium price?

They are just hitting the streets but best bet is to wait another week or so and look at the KT400 boards. Teh southbridge has USB2.0 and the KT400 chipset will support the 166mhz FSB Athlons.

There are some KT400 boards on Pricewatch, but again wait at least a week to see if any new ones comes out, and the price should drop a couple of pennies.

His old system has given up the ghost, so he really can not wait.I need to build something now, and would like 333 support with the 1/5 divider. I was all set to buy the EPOX 8k3a when I saw that they no have the 8k5a boards.
What should I buy that exists now?

I would suggest the Epox 8K5A2 or the 8K5A2+. Those boards are both based on the KT333 chipset, have the 1/5 divider, and also have the new 8235 Southbridge that comes on the newer KT400 boards. I wouldn't bother with the KT400 right now anyway since they are experiencing some growing pains, and most of them have actually tested slower than the newer KT333 boards like the Epox.

The Epox will also work fine with the new 333mhz FSB Athlons. :)

Go to pricewatch.com and search for kt400. The gigabyte board is cheap and looks good

If not then go for the 8K5A2+.

"Go to pricewatch.com and search for kt400. The gigabyte board is cheap and looks good "

Yes, the GA-7VAX (KT-400) is listed at approx. $100.00 shipped, wihch is a good price, but I can find no information (in English) on this board, other that on the Gigabyte website, and thay only list the GA-7VAXP board.

Does anyone have any info on the quality of this board?

Yea that is the only thing I see.

KT400 board gigabyte

I think the ones without the P just don't have Raid. But best thing to do is go to the vendors web-site and see what comes on the board and what comes on the P board and see what is missing.

Apparently the ASUS A7V8X is now in stock at Newegg.com ... $155 but goddamn if I don't want that mobo right this instant! I'll probably order it within a week or two.

I've always been an ABit fan. If the $$ don't kill ya, their stuff usually is great (an understatement IMHO).

The KX7 (KT333 and KD7 (KT400) both make me drool a bit (sorry that was a terrible pun.... forgive me :D )
