Looking to build intermediate level gaming PC..any thoughts?

I'm looking to build an intermediate level gaming PC but haven't been keeping up on my reading. Unfortunately, I don't feel like I have time to catch up right now but want to build this thing soon or at least start procuring parts. I'm looking for opinions on P4 vs Athlon64 and motherboard to go with it. I'm also interested in people's thoughts on video cards. I'd like to get a decent card with out throwing down $300. Thanks for your thoughts in advance.
