looking to build a new rig

To be honest I haven't kept up lately what would be best on processors or ram.

So what I'm looking for is suggestions on the fastest system for about 1000-1500.

I have a few dvd-rw drives so dvd drive and sound card are lowest priority.

Looking for the best recommendations to get the best speed out of this system.

I'll probably look at either a 7800 gforce or ati1800 (haven't decided yet). I'm open to recommendations on processor, ram, vidcard, mobo, and case/powersupply.

Thanks

Hmm, I suggest Am2, but others are jumping on the conroe bandwagon. Get a AM2 4200, and a X1900XTX and be happy!

I'd with for Conroe, or Core 2 Duo as it seems to be called. Shipping starts in July. So far, it looks like it's going to whip anything AMD has to offer. But we'll see.

Why do people compare conroe, a next gen cpu, to amds current lineup? Honestly K8L will kick the ****** out of conroe. I will never purchase intel again.

Is this system mainly for games? If so, which ones?

How do you know this?

Considering the alternative, it has to.

Oh.

From the benchies we have seen so far of Conroe and AM2, it looks like Conroe is going to offer the best price/performance ratio. The speed increase is pretty significant, and the stated prices of Conroe cpu's look very attractive. I don't have anything against either manufacturer, in fact I have built systems using both. I don't think sticking with one, and ignoring the other is a very good idea.

That said, if buying today, I would suggest the following...

Single Core - AMD 64
Lower end dual core - Intel 805 and 900 series
Higher end dual core - AMD X2

Just what is that supposed to mean?

It is a gamer system. Games like BF2 and WoW mainly. Some Doom and COD2 also.

Guys I know that the new processors are coming out but here is the deal 1500 is the limit so buying a 500 dollars for a processor and 400 bucks for a vidcard doesn't leave me much breathing room for anything else. Hehe spend my money give me a good recommendation for a good system.

Change PSU to Fortran on Newegg for $51.
There's no 'a' in Fortron. 😉

cougar, what resolution will you be playing at?

Preliminary suggestions:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ - ~$300
ASUS A8N5X - ~$80
Corsair ValueSelect 2x1GB memory - ~$150
ATI Radeon X1800XT 256MB/512MB - $250-$280/$300 (depends on resolution)
Fortron AX450-PN - ~$50

I'm a little hesitant about recommending a case. What kind of aesthetics are you looking for? Door or no door? Window? Noise concerns?

It depends...

Im ASSUMING you have no rig right now...

Its best to wait for Conroe to come out in August as it appears to be the fastest processor us gamers will ever have had a chance to get. Its price will rival others too, rather than be very expensive like top processors usually are.

And if Conroe does not shatter all speeds, it will at least be a little better, and with 4mb cache and dual core, with such a great price, its still a great buy.

But, don't forget that purchasing a system to build now is not the worst thing. Its still 2-3 months before Conroe is available, and you can get a lot of gaming done in that time if you go ahead and build now.

AMD's new socket, AM2, is arriving, but does not offer any performance gains in the real world. Its just a way of introducing DDR2 to AMD platforms and opening up AMD fans to future upgrades which will be great - once they are here, in 2007 most likely. You're better off passing up AM2 for right now.

Remember, Intel's Conroe will be GREAT, but it doesnt mean whats available today is shabby. We have some amazing processors available right now.

At 1200-1500 you can build a great system. Look for the AMD 64 X2 3800, which is a dual core chip that is easily overclockable, at about $300. Add a $430 Ati x1900xt to that (The X1900XT is a step below Ati's top card, and top card overall in graphics, the X1900XTX. The X1900XT is easily overclockable to XTX speeds). Pair this on an Nforce4 Ultra board with 2X1gb PC3200 ram for $230ish. Add in an 80gb SATA2 Seagate HD for $50. People say go with seasonic and fortran, among others, for the PSU, but I find Antec makes great PSUs at great prices. A 450w TRUEpower (as opposed to SMARTpower) will run about $80. Thats about $1100, throw in random things like dvd burner, XP Home or Media Center, a cheap case, extra cooling and monitor if you dont have one and you should be within budget...

If he's going to gaming the Quadro can be replaced, its for video editing or 3D imaging/game development.

Guys thanks a lot, I really do appreciate your suggestions.
To answer some of the questions, I do have a pretty decent rig, athlon 64 3400, 2gig ram, gforce 6800 ultra, asus K8N mobo. I'm just getting ideas for what to look for in the next few months to build a better rig with pci-express vidcard and dual core processor.
I have a 20.1 2007FPW dell lcd, my native res is 1680x1050 and will play at that res on any game that supports it.

As far as cases are concerned, I'm looking for a good case that will keep the setup cool. A good somewhat quiet, cool case is preferred. The side window isn't a big deal unless it really helps with cooling the case. I have my computer room usually running about 5 computers constantly and when I'm in the room, the temp is about 2-3 degrees warmer then the rest of my place (73ish compared the rest of the place at 70). So keeping the system cooled is something I want but don't really want to mess with water cooling).
