I really don't care about too much. I'd like to be able to play most games at medium to high settings. I surf the net, do homework, and a little photoshop.

I have no allegiances to any brands or anything like that. I'll need to purchase windows 7 and a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and etc.

I would like to spend around $1000.

CPU: AMD P2X4 955 BE ($165)
MB: Gigabyte UD3P AM3 (The egg is out of stock; $82 on Directron)
RAM: 4GB G.Skill ECO DDR3-1333 ($110)
Case + PSU: Antec 300 Illusion and Earthwatts 500w PSU Combo ($120)
GPU: ATI 5770 (~$150)
HSF: Scythe Mugen 2 ($40)
Monitor: ASUS VH242H ($190)
HDD : WD Caviar Black 640GB ($75)
DVD: Any brand really ($25)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium ($120)
Keyboard: Saitek Eclipse ($31)
Mouse: Logitech MX518 (was $25 AR, otherwise pick whatever you want)

This puts you at $1148 before taxes, shipping, and rebates. Prices are off mostly the Egg, so I'm sure you might be able to find deals elsewhere. You could probably make minor adjustments here 'n there, but that's just really quickly put together with parts off the top of my head. As long as you aren't maxing out Crysis, the 5770 should have no problems handling most games at the resolution that monitor is capable of (1920 x 1080, I think). You could opt for a slower processor (AMD 620 Propus) to save about $70. The AMD hexacore Thuban should put some processor support for later if you ever find a need for it (probably not). There are cheaper cases, but nothing gets better value than the Antec 300 IMO. That setup should blaze through everything you need, but again, it's a little over $1000 (Most people have the OS and monitor already, so the prices combined puts you at ~$700 for parts).

Last but not least, do you live near a Microcenter? That should be a required question for all potential builds :D

I have the Saitek eclipse, and I love it because I can see the keys in the dark, but I can't turn on the PC with ctrl-f1 like I used to with my old keyboard.

If you have a Sam's club membership, check to see if you can find the:

http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/nav...481&pCatg=5816

It is similar (little bit slower) than the computer MisterDonut posted, but its on clearance for less than $600 including a 23' monitor. So even with a 5770, total should be in the mid 700 range, saving you nearly $400 over building it yourself.

Or if you want a really fast system:

http://www.jr.com/hp/pe/HP_E9290F_hy...GW0C*M3nhdluOw

Keep in mind it is refurbished and no monitor. But, this system is a lot faster than the AMD one. Currently price is $100 more than the sale price. (It was $799 for awhile). So with a 24 inch TN monitor would still be under your 1000 budget for a i7-920 system with 9gb of DDR3. (usually not seen in build your own)

Not an Antec 200 T.T. Unless you drive an old school Chrysler. Or you think it's appealing...

Otherwise I'd do something similar to that build. Nothing you're doing really needs an i7 or tons of RAM. You should be OK processor-wise with a Deneb. If your budget must strictly be under $1k, drop down to the AMD 620 Propus, make a few minor adjustments here 'n there, and begin your gaming. Like I said earlier, Thuban will provide a beefier processor down the road if you ever need a beefier processor.

Here's a system that meets your budget (even before rebate and after shipping!).

It's got a nice, fast hard drive, a non-hideous case (I'm looking at you Antec Two Hundred), a good-quality Samsung monitor ($110 off until the 31st!), and a video card that's well matched to that resolution in the 5770.

I wasn't able to fit the 5850 in this build and stay under budget. If you're willing to spend $100 more, you can drop the 5850 into this build. You could also go with a cheaper 1080P monitor, but that wouldn't match the 5770 as well. I personally tend to go for quality over size (of course quality AND size is the best, but you don't have the budget for that :D).

EDIT: That keyboard I picked does come with a mouse (specs say so and reviewers talk about it), but Newegg didn't take a picture of it for some reason.

EDIT2: That mobo in the combo is DDR2 only, whoops, edited build, same price though.

$10 off the WD 640Gb 'Black' with code EMCYPNT46 this weekend.

I wouldn't 'key' an OEM copy of Win7 to a cheap-arse mobo --- try to find one with SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 support .... and in the case of AMD, some vendors ('Gigabyte') are already listing x6 Thuban support.

I'd stick with the HD 5770 ---- if you want the option to 'expand' in the future with a second video card consider a 650w or so PSU.

For under $1k including OS and monitor, this build should be blazing fast. Thumbs up for this (pretty much the same parts I recommended :D, go me). @heyheybooboo, I think it might be better to just pick up a faster single card GPU. We're gonna see a lot of developments, me thinks :D. What do you think?
