how much of a performance difference would I be looking at if I went with the AMD Athlon X2 3600+ with 2GB of memory on Vista vs the C2D 4300 with 1gb of memory?

Considering the fact that Vista uses 800MB JUST for the OS alone, it would be a huge difference.

Just to elaborate, Vista has a feature called SuperFetch which caches all your most popular programs/files to RAM. The more RAM you have, the more it caches. In my machine, Vista caches Photoshop CS3 with the extra RAM I have. The result is that Photoshop loads in 3-4 seconds.

More RAM is king in Vista.

Agreed you want 2GB.

Both the AMD Athlon X2 3600+ and Intel 4300 are fast chips, you would most likely not notice the difference between the two in real world usage. There are upgrade paths for sockets so you can move to a faster CPU when/if you choose so thats not really a factor.

I would go with the AMD AM2 route simply because the 6150 (AMD only) chipset that is used on the Abit board I linked to is better then anything on available on the Intel side.

I would look for a power supply that is efficient too. I didn't check on the specs for the one mentioned earlier but Seasonic's are ususally very efficient (over 80%) and not too expensive if you don't need a big one.

I run single core AMD64s and Nvidia 6600s on 330w Seasonics and have a little bigger one with 5 hared drives and a similar setup. I know the video cards mentioned do suck some more power though.

I'd personally get 2 sitcks of RAM, whether 512s or 1GBs.

YMMV

Go with the Abit NF-M2 6150 based board and you don't need a video card.

I couldn't see an integrated video card to suit what I'm looking for. I do play the lighter games, but occasionally I might wanna slap on a higher req game and play some

The 6150 has a pretty decent GPU, what exactly do you intend to play?

Besides there is also a PCI-E 16x slot that will have you covered if you find the on board GPU isn't cutting it.

Get this one instead, it is a better deal anyways.

Or you can ponder it and wait until it is OOS too.
