Was wanting to try and build a laptop for my nephew but i'm a newbie to Laptops.

have built all my PC's,plus PC's for others but wanna try a laptop out.

Just got a few questions on the basic Board,CPU,case, and Ram to get.

Heres what i'm looking into setting up:

PII 233-400 - Or Celeron 300+ (No higher then 400 for either CPU)
64Mb-128Mb
2.0G HD or so
cheap Vid card
Cdrom/DVD
Floppy

Will there be a prob getting certain boards to fit certain case's?

Any info on the 3 or 4 main things i would need would be appreciated.(Board, case,CPU,Ram)
or even links would help.

Thanks.

Shawn.

You can?t put together a laptop like you can a desktop. The main reasons for this are that the video, harddrive controler, COM/LPT/USB ports, are imbedded onto the main board(s). Sometimes the CPU is soldered directly on the board to reduce the thickness. The case, motherboard, and display are all designed to fit together like a glove. Everything else that you add is either going to be through PCMCIA or USB.

In my experiences with laptops you get *exactly* what you pay for and a name brand (i.e. IBM) is definitely the way to go. You?ll end up paying about $1000 more and it will still end up as a paperweight in 2-3 years, but the support and more importantly the quality of the unit is well worth it... learned that the hard way
