Alright, ATOT - here's the deal.

My fiancee and I are looking to get a Dachshund. She's wanted one her entire life and I love dogs too so, ya thats that. In any case, I am finding it miserably difficult to find one without spending a fortune. We have to pay a pet deposit at our apartment to begin with, so I have to figure that into the costs, but I'm willing to spend a few hundred on a puppy dachshund. There are a few problems though.

1. Puppy shops are ridiculously overpriced, we are talking $800+ for puppies.
2. Animal shelters are very difficult to find Dachshunds in, although we have been checking as often as possible.
3. Rescue places around Florida have waiting lists to get these puppies and are extremely anal about who they give dogs to. They require home inspections and all kinds of other stuff. I don't mind doing that, but between that and long waiting lists etc... just seems like a long shot.

So ATOT, specifically Florida ATOTers - help me out. Does anyone know of anyone who is selling baby Dachshunds for a reasonable price? I'm willing to travel a couple hours to pick one up. We are looking for one under 1 year of age, preferably under 6 months. Short haried. If we are to be picky ultimately a female brown one would be awesome !

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out.

A quick googling brings LOTS of relatively inexpensive options:

BYB FTL!!!! Please do not buy a dachshund from one of these backyard breeders who is just looking to make a buck. WTF, domesticsale.com?

The rescues I listed foster their dogs and detail their personalities/issues/etc.

I rescued my doxie, Mojo, when he was 3 yr old. Due to the huge overpopulation of dogs in GA, he was on death row and scheduled for the gas chamber that week. A local rescue group in MA drives a van down to GA monthly to save these dogs. They are then spayed/neutered and fostered in volunteers home.

Mojo was already house-trained and had perfect house manners. Zero work though he loves to chase cats.
