Looking into laptops, know NOTHING about them, help

Rifter

Lifer
Good morning all, im asking all my family for money for x-mas and will put it into a laptop so i thoguht i would start to reasearch now. I know nothing about them, i am a computer tech and know alot about desktop/servers/networking etc but nothing mobile. So i will tell you guys what i need the laptop to do and then we can decide what i need. Budget less than $850, prefer $700 or less but willing to pay more if i can get more laptop for the money by stepping up to a higher end system.

Must be able to do following tasks, will list a % of time spent doing them to give idea:

10% - Use emulation software to play old Genesis, SNES games(I think even those super slow intel atem? atom? CPU's can do this right?)

60% - Play compressed HD video, 1080P(this will be the biggest CPU/VGA intense task i think)

- Have a 1366 x 768 res screen.

- HDMI out that works for audio and video

10% - Play older games, by older i mean HL 2 era, not DOOM 1 era(not to hard to do is it?)

20% - Office apps, browsing(will use openoffice)

- Being linux compatable would be a huge + but i can live with MS if i have to. Would prefer coming loaded with win 7 so i can try it out, dont really like vista.

That out of the way i prefer AMD/ATI over intel, i think this is because every friend i have spoken to said the intergrated Intel graphics(herd 4500M mentioned alot) i will find in this price range really suck, like badly, like not even funny badly. And that going with a ATI VGA chipset would be (like 5x better) better if i plan to do any gaming. And i think this means i would need to get a AMD CPU based system, which funny enough everyone tells me Intel mobile CPU's are better so i dont really know what to do, i think i would sacrifice CPU to get better VGA.

Things that do not matter AT ALL to me:

- Battery life(will be used 99% of time at work, 3 ft from wall socket)

- HDD size(have multiple USB HDD's/Memory stick)

- Upgradeability, if it has 2GB + of ram ill be happy.

- Multi core(i dont care if it has 1 fast core, 2 slower cores, or 200 really slow cores, as long as it can do what i want)

Any suggestions?

if you want to play with linux then nvidia is the way to go. ati drivers for linux is not up to par compared to nvidia. also, you are right that you'll only find ati gpu with amd cpu, which is not as good as an intel cpu. so my suggestion is find a laptop with an intel processor and a nvidia gpu

In the world of laptops, Intel has generally been superior to AMD. You can combine Intel with ATI or Nvidia graphics. Be careful of popular mythology.

I think the Sony VAIO laptop (VPC-CW17FX/W) from Best Buy would fits your bill and is very reasonably priced.

Dedicated nVidia graphics card (G210M, 256MB), which can play the latest game with decent frame rates according to people who has owned it (read buyer reviews at Best Buy web site)

14.1" LED back-lid widescreen (1366 x 768)
Blu-Ray disc play back, DVD/CD burner
Core 2 Duo processor (T6600)
4GB DDR3 memory
500GB HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)

I checked this laptop out at Best Buy a few weeks ago and was impressed with the quality.
This laptop doesn't generate a lot of heat like others and was barely warm to the touch. You probably be able to buy it for less than the current price of $830 if you wait long enough for the sale. It was priced at $800 (not on sale) when I was there a few weeks ago.

i dont remember seeing intel + ati in a long time.
It's been there all along. Check out the Lenovo T400 with discrete graphics. Intel Core 2 Duo w/ ATI Mobility Radeon. Heck, my T60 has a Mobility Radeon and it's 2 years old.

must be in mxm format then b/c i thought amd stopped making intel chipsets long ago
Don't understand the comment. AMD bought ATI - ATI makes discrete graphics cards and chipsets for several laptops with Intel processors. HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, and Dell to name a few. I didn't know that AMD ever made Intel chipsets. These are not MXM, but discrfeet graphics chipsets/cards on the mobo.

If you really want uptown performance - go Intel and Nvidia

Should also mention im in canada, so alot of the laptop models are not available here, and prices are higher. Im trying to find that sony model here but it seems to be expensive where im looking.

There were to be a lot of cheap 2-2.4gHz C2D/4gb/250-500gb/9600M laptops around last time I shopper (this summer) that would do all that well

If you can survive without a blu-ray there is a AMD/ATi setup you may want to consider.

I do not know what shipping and tariffs may add to it though...and you may want to hold off on any purchase until this Friday and see what stores do for Black Friday.

This is actually one on my short list...my current laptop (Intel Core 2/nVidia 8600) melted because it ran too hot (vented with extra fans still too hot) and just died last week so I'm considering going back to AMD. Not sure about the Linux issues, my tower is AMD/ATi and I have not had any issues with Ubuntu.

Good luck and happy shopping!

You can go to Sony web site and order the Sony laptop there. The 14" laptop (CW series) is on sale for a good discount (VPCCW190X Configure-to-Order). I was able to purchase the 14" laptop with the following options for $755USD.

Dedicated GT230M graphics card with 512MB VRAM memory (this is better than the GT210M graphics card that's being offered on the Best Buy's model)
Core 2 Duo T6600 (2.2GHz)
4GB DDR3 memory
320GB HDD
Blu-Ray disc playback, CD/DVD burner
Windows 7 Home Premium
Bluetooth
Wireless B/G/N
Firewire port, USB ports (3)

You could take a look at the G60Vx - the laptop I currently have.

It is $999.99 at Best Buy. You don't get old graphics though, you're stuck with the second fastest Laptop GPU - a GTX 260M.
