The only way I would even consider film at this point is if:
1) You purchase quality film in advance from a low cost source
2) You already have a Costco membership and a warehouse nearby
Fuji Superia should run between $1.50-$3.50 per 24 exposure roll, depending on the speed. Costco will give you fast, reliable developing, but the real bonus is they will give you high-resolution scans of the negatives on a CD, so you can easily manipulate the files digitally.
Of course, you could pony up for a DSLR and skip all those steps altogether.
