Looking for way to clean up install of windows as I install

Hi,

I have tried registry mechanic, pc medic, mighty pc and other programs that are supposed to help fix windows installs.

They usually are the free version.. and even after fresh installs, they claim multiple problems, but if you send them $30 they will fix it for you.

Are there really that many problems? (rhetorical question)

Just looking for some good tools a non programmer can use to get the OS running a little better.

Also.. I like to have a few components off the OS drive, like the Docs files, TIF, IE, Page Filing, etc..

Seem to get more than a few DLL problems.. anyone have any insights as to the things that I really should not move from C: or any fixes or ways to install to make all work better?

Thanks!

I would not trust those programs, they are not needed. If you are doing a clean install with genuine media, you should be fine.

It is possible to move My Documents to another drive, I don't know how though. TIF, I don't know what you mean by that. I don't know what you mean by saying you want to move IE. With the Page File, my advice would be to leave it alone.

Otherwise I would reccomend that you go to Windows Update and make sure you have all of the updates.

Regarding third-party utilities, in today's environment it would be smart not to go downloading & running just any old thing off the Internet like that. Microsoft's Live OneCare online safety scanner can check for Registry errors, as well as spyware, viruses, and unnecessary leftover files. Have it do a full-service scan.
