looking for upgrades to my current rig

Asus p5b Mobo
c2d 6420 @ 2.13
2gigs of ram
Galaxy Geforce 250 1g

I play games and i play lots of them, my max res on my dell is 1600x1200.
I get great fps in modern warfare but i notice at times my fps will drop somewhat.
Should i go quad or i7 and why?
Would adding more ram help?
Eventually replacing the video card not that its needed but if theres something better out there that is significant i would consider it. Thanks everyone

Heya,

I would suggest you jump your CPU up and your GPU up if you want to really crank out gaming performance more. A new GPU would help, but your CPU would hold back a more modern GPU. So it's sort of a hand-in-hand upgrade there. More RAM will not do squat for your games.

I would suggest you look at the new i3 530. Anandtech just reviewed it. For $100 you can get a 4ghz dualcore basically. It's a great chip for someone to upgrade to from your situation. Then add something like a GTX260, or wait for Fermi. Or grab a 5000 series ATI (5830, 5770 on the budget side).

Or get an older quad that will work with your board to keep your board/ram to limit how much you spend. A Q9550 or something maybe.

Very best,

Or you can try overclocking.

And actually, 4GB of ram might help. I havent actually tested this theory and verify it, but I did pull out some ram out of my brother's comp - leaving him with 2x1GB. His comp has similar specs as mine, except his 4830 is the 512MB version. His cpu and 4830 are both overclocked.

His comp ended up struggling with MW2 while mine played it pretty smoothly. Lowering some settings didn't help him enough, so I don't think it's the 512MB vram. Opening up task manager also showed him using up almost the entire 2GB of ram. BTW, he uses Win7.

Anyways, I'm betting it's the cpu at 2.13GHz. That needs to be overclocked to around 3GHz.

However, seeing how expensive ram is these days, maybe it's worthwhile selling the cpu+mobo+ram and moving to i5+P55+DDR3. I wouldn't consider i3 just because I wouldn't want another dual core. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but all i3 are dual cores+'gpu', right?)

If your mobo supports a Yorkfield 45nm chip, install one of those. A Q9550 goes for 170$ still at MicroCenter. E0 stepping. If your mb supports them, get one of those and a 5870 and you'll be set for a while.

I just finished Modernwarfare 2 and my gpu is about = to yours. I play at 1600x1200 also. I had a e8400 before my q9550 and there is no difference in Modern warefare 2,
If you overclocked that cpu you would be fine.

That q9550 looks like a great deal at 170$ if you have the money and want a long term upgrade.

that looks like a great deal so core i7's are to early to determine if there good or?
(I know i will have to upgrade my mobo if i intend to get one eventually)
and these new fermi chipsets how much we looking for a new card?

Fermi2? 😉

You should be looking at ATI's 5000series cards. 5850 will breeze through gaming at 1600x1200 with a strong enough CPU/platform.

5850 blazes through anything you can throw at it. Literally. If you have interest in games like GTA IV, you'd need a quadcore. Otherwise a high OC'ed dual core can take games pretty well. Otherwise a 5770 should suffice, and keeps the option of a cheap CFX open (If you pick up a capable motherboard).

Even though my 9550 runs through everything as fast as my 5850, I wouldn't pick it up if you plan to keep your computer for more than (3ish?) years. Go with a 1336/1156 socket. It will stay in shape much, much longer than 775.
