Hi everybody,
So, i'm thinking about doing an overhaul this summer (new case, new mobo, new memory, and new CPU) and i'm sort of bewildered at all the options.
Right now i'm running a P4 1.8, on an Intel motherboard, with 512 megs of PC800 RDRAM (4x128). I have a 9700 Pro, and a SBLive 5.1. I'm thinking about pushing my processor to the 3.0 and up range, staying with the P4 the new mobo reviewed on Anand (the MSI Neo-FIS2R) looks tempting, and i'm thinking 1 gig of DDR ram?
Here are my questions:
There seem to be two types of P4 processors at the top of the line now. There's a 3.06 GHz for about 350, and there's a 3.0 with 800mhz FSB for about 550. What makes the 3.0 that much better? is it really that much faster?
There's so much DDR ram, i don't know what to do with it. It looks like Micron sells sticks of 512 for about $60. Is there any serious difference between PC 2100, PC2700, and PC400? which is best? which is reliable? I'm lost when it comes to ram.
and is this a good time to upgrade? will prices be cut soon? should i wait or buy?
