I bought the free after rebate 50x Prime Peripherals CD drive from Office Max a month ago, which turned out to be an Afreey drive. It works fine, but when its running it sounds like an aircraft taking off.

Which drives are really quiet and are good quality??

I purposely got rid of my Creative CD Drive and payed extra for a TEAC 540E. It's only a 40X but it's very quiet. In the reviews I've read, it read pressed CD's, CD-R's, and CD-RW's all at its rated speed and for me, this has been the case as well.

I got the following quotes from cdrinfo.com.

<< The Teac 540E is a very good IDE CD-Rom drive. It performed very well with pressed and CD media in all of our tests. It had possibly the fastest reading speed when using RW media (30.38x average reading speed). The DAE reading speeds are very good for an IDE CD-ROM and managed to outperform even the Plextor 40x CD-Rom. In addition the drive seek time is very low (60ms) which is usefull when reading CDs with a lot of small files. The combination of performance, DAE speed and media compatibility combined with a very low price = killer combo! >>

The only negative about the drive was its CloneCD compatibility. It worked but it was too slow in skipping over errros. But your burner would be able to handle this anyway so it's not too big of a negative.

Hi,

The Kenwood 72x and 52x are the quietest, and the fastest cdrom readers.
The also have a fantastically high DAE rate.
However, they are expensive, difficult to find and are lousy with CDR-CDRW media.

So I agree with the TEAC choice.
