A long time ago I bought an emachines 17'' emachines flat screen crt (vga connection) from a retail store because they had it for a very low price after rebates so had it know for a couple of years, untill recently I started experiencing an abnormal behaviour from it. The settings menu starts blinking every now and then screen controls are becoming useless and sometimes switched or swapped most probably a loose connector on the front buttons controllerboard or board got short circuited somehow, but unfortunatly not being able to reach it without damaging crt even more, A flat panel isn't an option that I would seriously considre for my gaming needs and the price difference between crt and flat panel is unjutified. deskspace is no problem for my gaming\media-editing machine .
I have been considering some 21" & 22" from ebay most of them are equipped with sony trinitron flat tube with a .24 dot pitch , the rest are either viewsonice IBM, or NEC multisync CRTs.
To be honest I have always had an excellent experience with IBM products workstations, peripherals ....etc I would jump on an auction for an IBM crt with a DVI connector but most of them are $219 after shipping I can afford that but is it really worth it to get? especially that IBM uses a sony trinitron tube just like others that are of the same specifications but for $60 less, also most of the others dont have a DVI connector. I would love to use the DVI connectors on my x800xl but does the translation process from digital to analog that happens inside the CRT when using my DVI connector ( with vga adapter) really cause any noticable hindrence in my setup?
Till now the best deals I have found on ebay is DELL 21" flat screen crt $170 (local pickup very close to me 10mins or so and the guy has an excellent powerseller 100% feedback with hundreds of sales on a regular basis) .
and thanks in advance for your help.

RE:"best deals I have found on ebay is DELL 21" flat screen crt $170."

I have a Dell P1110 and it's beautiful. Hooked up to an old Matrox Millenium card.
If you can see it ON before you buy you're way ahead. Set it to a white background and look for scratches etc.

Check out your local Craigslist for CRTs. If you live near a major city you'll probably find some good deals. Today I'm going to take a look at a Dell P1110 that a guy is selling for 70 bucks. =)

that was my next step, I know a friend that is a finsncial advisor for a big company in my area and he said he is going to contact me after talking to the IT department to see if there is anything they needed to get rid off such as ( huge crts servers, peripherals....etc) so ya I am looking into that option too.

Well the guy offers 3 month replacement warranty so obviously he wouldn't mind if I come in and hook it up to my laptop for 1 minute or two to see how it works.

the IBM one is intresting just as well as the NEC but they are both grade B meaning they can host some minor screen scratches, did u ever buy a grade B from them and do you think these scratches can be repaired same same way normal glass scratch is repaired, or are they negleigiible.?

Well if the Dell is local you're a lot better off. I bought mine at a Computer show for $190 a couple years ago. There was a small scratch in the lower rh corner that I didn't see because i was unable to view a white screen.
Other than that I'm very satisfied and marvel at the colors the thing displays.
It's basically a Sony...I suspect the matrox card has something to do with the beautiful color too.

No, don't even attempt it. There is a antiglare coating on the glass. Don't use amonia or an amonia based cleaner on it either (windex etc)

You know what that didn't come to my mind , thanx for pointing that out. I was talking about the same way watches are repaired they have this little drill like peice of equipment with a glass scratch reapir disc attachment that basically smoothens the surface so I had something like that in my mind but obviously it will damage the anti-glare coating too.

1. They are both Grade A.
2. Don't buy Grade B.
3. IBM P260, NEC FE1250+

That's not a bad deal if the guy is w/in driving distance. Problem w/ 95% of the CRT deals on e-bay is the shipping.. CRTs are inherently heavy and as a result a 21" costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $45-$60 just to ship. *woosh!* there goes the savings.. :(

man that pisses me so much that you can shop for monitors in a smarter way get the bigger screen and get it flat but let it be a CRT but after shipping cost that flapt panel cost $10 to ship compared to that whooping $60 for the CRT what a load of BS :(
