Hi guys (and girls), I'm looking into building a 1ghz pc and pushing it to 1200
if I can but I don't want the LOUD options we all have heard about.

So, how about a Hedgehog or fop or pal6035 with a 80mm fan w/the grill helping with the attachment to the heatsink if you follow me....

How about the new version of the PEP-66 for the socket-A ??? (UPDATE)

(Put a 80mm grill on the top of the heatsink and use at least a couple screws to attach it to the hs, then attach the fan using the usual holes on the grill.)

Does anybody sell a funnel for this ??

Wouldn't that keep the dbs down and the cfm up ???

Let me know what you think.

Not really sure that would get you the same amount of airflow. Reason is if you do that, then the heatsink would be directly under the bearing, and there usually isn't much airflow there.

At the same time, if you get a funnel somehow, you may have some problems with the size of the thing. I know that the Alpha is pretty tall to begin with.

Personally, I think if you really want to reach those speeds, you're going to have to sacrifice the silence of a single fan system. Those fast TBirds just run hot.

Believe it or not...I've just finished installing two 92mm fans in my BP6 (w/twin 366's/572Mhz@2.0v) running Win NT4. & it has made a change for the better :)
I started with an Alpha HS/f with temps (via MB monitor) in the 40C range. (case closed)
After installing the 92mm fans aprox. 2.5 in. over generic HeatSyncs
the temp has dropped to 33-34c (case closed)
The unit is crunching seti work units for 2 weeks with out any problems.

Now If I were to replace the generic Heatsyncs with Alphas I'd remove the 60mm fan from the alpha & place a 92mm-120mm fan 2-2.5 in. over the unit. :) Then the better HS & fan setup would really kick!

(The BP6 is installed in a Desktop case, this may make a difference? But I'm not sure.)

After reading the original post, I was going to say that generally you get the best performance by having the fan blow air away from the heatsink and thus using a funnel type arrangement probably wouldn't help...

But after reading lhampel's note....I am curious.

lhampel - are your fans blowing toward or away from the CPU? I kind of assume toward... but just in case, how much space do you have on the other side of your fans? do you have a vent on the other side?

Strike, I've got the fans blowing toward the Heatsync(s).
Fans are mounted about 2-2.5 In. over the CPU's with about the 2-2.5 In. of space above the fans. No blow holes, but I do have several of the metal slot inserts out.
The Powersupply also has an exit fan that is close to one of the CPU's. (also 92mm)

This has been my best cooling mod (without blow holes) for a desktop case. :)
