Great keyboard, great mouse (UltraNav is amazing), it's quite light, the construction is nothing short of amazing (so much better than those dell's... i used to have a 4000... felt SO flimsy with that plastic construction), and it fits in regular laptop bags.

🙂

Considering the T40 sells for almost double ($3200) what a similar Dell Centrino goes for I would expect it to have superior construction! The Thinkpads are nice but way overpriced for what you get....

I would have to disagree with that. A "similar" Dell Centrino would have to be a Latitude, not an Inspiron (which would be the only way to come up with a huge price difference between the 2 brands). Try pricing similar options for the T40 and a Latitude D600, I'll bet there's not more than a couple hundred dollars difference, if that. And the IBM will be higher quality all around... 😉

Avatar26 is definitely right there... I just priced out an Inspiron 600m though, and similarly equipped to my T40, except for the fact that the Dell only goes up to a 60GB HDD vs 80GB in the IBM and the Dell has a 6cell battery instead of a 9cell, the Inspiron doesn't come in at much less than my T40 (~$2694 vs. $3000 that I paid for my T40). Anyway, I'll try to get those pics up soon... lots of stuff going on now with classes and such

The only difference between the D600 and 600M is the case (and keyboard pointing stick) otherwise they are the same exact machine. The 600M (TOL)can be had for under $1700 with Dell coupons/rebates factored in. Yes the IBM has a better case and battery life but is it worth that much more $$$$? IMHO I feel the answer is no...

Not trying to be confrontational, man. To each their own. I need mine to be as durable as possible, too many kids/pets can get at the laptop when I'm not home, not to mention the lovely (read: rude, annoying, and bruising) treatment my bags get when I travel.🙂

Agreed... If you read through the begining of these messages I recommended the T40. My original reply was to another user who was comparing a older 4000 series Dell against the new IBM T40, not quite a fair comparison! The Centrino Dell's are VERY nice, espically when you take price into consideration.
