looking for that ultra clean defragmented feeling

I hate my fragemented hard drive. I am trying to get the hardrive to defragment before it loads windows. I am currently using Norton Speed Disk to try to get the hard drive nice and defragmented, but the files that are being used and the system files dont get moved so the core of the file system is unoptimized. maybe i am just being an obsessive compulsive wierdo, but i would really like to get a real solid pre-boot defragmentation. I know that I can get checkdisk to schedule for at reboot, but i cant seem to do the same with speed disk. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

They will all do what you want, try the trial versions and then buy the one you like.

If you're running Windows XP you can do this out of the box.

Make sure you have administrator access
Go to Start > Run
Type "cmd" without the quotes.
At the prompt, type "defrag" followed by the volume letter (c, then one of these switches:

-a to analyze your volume
-f to force the defrag even if your free space is low
-v to get a verbose output
-b to optimize your boot files to speed up your boot process

I still don't follow you, SpeedDisk does move system files (and while the system is live). Only Diskkeeper (AFAIK) has a boot mode option and that is only to deal with the pagefile/mft (somethign SpeedDisk does online without the need to reboot). Doing this at boot mode is silly as there is nothing you can do there you can't already do..

Is it possible to do more than one drive using the command line defrag?

i.e. defrag c: d: e: -f -b

I'm compelled to point out it would have taken you less time to determine this yourself than to post the question. None the less, no defrag will report "Two or more parameters that could be a volume exist. There can be only one drive letter or volume mount point parameter."

i use perfectdisk...its really good and very fast and you could have it do automated defrags periodically when it feels the HD is defragmented. if you're worried about ur pagefile, try pagedefrag from sysinternals

Try the trial version of Diskeeper. Great program. It has a boot time mode which will defrag the pagefile, MFT, and entire HDD. It wil defrag all files when reboot. I love it, it gives that nice, soapy feel of a clean installation.
