I really cant afford any lessons, and I managed to teach myself drums, and get pretty darn good at it all on my own. Im attempting to do the same thing on a guitar. I dont know anything, chords, how to pic, etc, etc. Im the NOOB of noobies.

I am in the same situation, I found a great site but I cant remember the URL. Search google, when I get home I will post the site.

it can be done, o yes -
google guitar tabs (find out how to read them)

get them from mxtabs.com or guitartabs.cc or allguitartabs.com

listen to the songs for timing, learn to play them

also, practive your chords a lot.

prepare to suck while you learn 🙂

although learning on ur own is great, i would recommend learning a few chords w/ someone else who knows how to play. guitar is frustrating learning, and i would imagine much worse on ur own.

That's pretty much what I did after I got my acoustic last summer -- got a printout of basic chords, then found songs that I liked on ultimate-guitar.com and other tab/chord sites, and started practicing. Start with some simple three chord tunes (Bad Moon Rising, etc.) and go from there. Be sure to listen to the originals to get a good idea of the rythm and patterns.

And like NiKeFiDO said, prepare to suck while you learn. It's harder than it looks, and your fingertips will be sore for awhile, but it's *so* cool when you actually begin to make actual music...

And it only gets cooler from there.

Do you have Comcast? Not sure it's still there, but for the longest time they had beginning guitar lessons in the On Demand stuff under music.

I signed up to one of those sites. They seem to help, but I've got a lot more work practicing chords which seems like a real daunting task.

I'd second the Fender videos. I also found the OnLine Guitar Archive to be a great resource for learning songs once you get a little better: http://www.olga.net/. I've been playing for years, and I still learn something new all the time.
