The only system currently in our household is a 360. Actually, three of them - since my girlfriend seems to think it is an acceptable method for Hulu and Netflix streaming in three different rooms.

I enjoy the 360 well enough, but my major problem with this console it's it's absolute lack of a good library of enjoyable RPG games. If I REALLY want to enjoy a long story I have to crack out the PS2 and load up some JRPG's to get my fix.

I've been throwing around the idea of getting a PS3, but that doesn't seem to go through any legitimate motions of solving the problem for me, as the PS3 library is just as cluttered with mindless sports and FPS/RTS games as the 360.. sort of just makes me feel like every new release is tailored to the 10-second attention span myspace/facebook generation frat boy crowd, and thats sort of infuriating when all I want is a good RPG/JRPG without having to crack out a fucking SNES to play Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, or a FF game to get my fix.

What would be my best single system to experience a slew of new games if I've only owned (to recent history) a SNES, PS1/PS2, and a 360?

Console Gaming crowd, help an addict out!

You've got everything you need. There's basically only two exclusive JRPGs on the PS3 and out in the USA: Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles.

What's wrong with the PS2? It probably has by far the most RPGs/JRPGs. Have you played them all?

You're saying there's no good RPGs on 360? I think right now there's a shatload of them, all those big honkin 100 hour JRPGs too. You should do more research. I can't get to the sites from work with the lists, but I love RPGs too, and if I got them all right now I wouldn't get them done before XBox 3 came out. There's that many.
To switch over to PS3 for one genre of game is pretty expensive, although I'm considering one just for a good baseball game, so us gamers are pretty wierd and dumb with our money in general. :)

This. The 360 probably has the best JRPGs for the current generation but the PS2 has a metric-ton in comparison.

OP, realize I just bought a 360 just for their jrpgs. I've had a PS3 and it has... very little... games... :( Bluray is shiny though.

Such as? Before I start the following allow me to state I am extremely critical of modern games that flash pretty graphics at braindead people to keep them amused. I don't care much about cutscenes or state of the art models. My criteria is as follows:

1) STORY - story, story, story, story. Christ I probably couldn't say this enough to my point to the severity I want to. I want to go into a game wondering about the characters, being interested with their interactions, progression, and development, and ultimately have an ending that is both exciting and something I did NOT see coming. NONE of the games I am about to list fit these criteria, yet SO many PS2 games did. Hell, most of the games for the 360 allow you to gather enough about the ending from either the title or the first few hours of gameplay..
2) Replayability. Let me elaborate upon this because it's important you understand that I do NOT mean some save game+ bullshit, I mean I want a game that I found so interesting that a few months down the line I'd be willing to start over from scratch knowing full well I would enjoy it. Chrono Trigger, Saga Frontier, Desega, almost all Final Fantasy games sans 8, 9, and 10-2 (and of course the online MMORPG) gave me this. Hell, to this very day I still find cause every now and then to load up Chrono Trigger and start a brand new NON new game+ scratch game just to enjoy the story. I want to be amazed again in a way only these titles can.
3) Depth/duration. 16 hours into Infinite Undiscovery when I was staring at the ending credits - after spending two days playing a game I had just spent fucking $60 for - my jaw dropped in absolute amazement and I was expecting the game to continue at any second like this was all some gigantic joke. Unfortunately it wasn't. While this is definately an extreme case, I do not expect all games to be like FFX where I can spend a legit 300 hours filling out the sphere grid and never get bored doing it, but jesus christ at the very least give me an 80 hour game if I'm paying $60 for it!

With that said, here are my more recent experiences to memory with the 360 that have left me extremely bitter.

Blue Dragon: Horrible rip of DBZ graphical styling, no character is really unique, they can all be the same thing. Story felt like it was written by a 15 year old until the last two hours of the game. Huge waste of my time that kept me AFK playing through fights while reading shit online more than anything, especially through the load times.

Eternal Sonata: Should not even be classified as an RPG. Could not keep playing past the 4 hour mark.

Infinite Undiscovery: Infinite Garbage. It's like they tried to turn Gods of War into a RPG and decided it needed a storyline similar to fucking Harbinger ala PS1. Did you ever play Harbinger? It was bad. And WAY too short. This game gets the award of the year for how to effectively TOTALLY fuck a player over on gearing large groups of characters (or, in this games case, NOT gearing them..)

Lost Odyssey: Kept me mildy interested for approximately 3 days before I saw the plot and inevitable ending flashing before my face like a gigantic neon sign not even halfway through the game. Finished it but it left a sour taste in my mouth. One of the two games I don't regret buying, but on that note were I to go back in time I STILL wouldn't buy it again.

Tales of Vesperia: The ONLY game I have no complaints about. Outside of Lost Odyssey this is the only game I do not regret buying, and that I find exciting enough and true enough to the original genre to play more than once.

Outside of that, what am I missing? I'm trying to be optimistic here but I'm only interested in jrpg style RPG's, as I consider games like Mass Effect, Oblivion and the like to be PC specific games and not truly the type of RPG I enjoy. If I've left something out, thats fine.. but some 10 games total to a system thats been out since.. what, 2005, is NOT a library of games. The PS2 had something like 250 RPG titles between the US and Japan. Thats a staggering difference in numbers.

The Nintendo DS might be worth considering but a lot of that platform's RPGs are ports, remakes and rehashes of older titles that you may have already played. It would allow you to play DS and GBA RPGs, though, and most are probably of the style that you are looking for. Otherwise it seems like you should just stick with the PS2.

What games, specifically? Outside from the upcoming Final Fantasy game my 360 is basically going to sit idle and/or be used as a Hulu streaming device until that game arrives stateside. Did I miss anything you've got your eye on in my previous post?

I'm seriously jonsin' for a PSP or something just so I can play the FF remakes and whatnot.

My biggest problem is the ease of getting PS2 games. Do services like Gamefly even do them anymore?

Why the DS over the PSP for RPG's?

I'm not as familiar with the PSP's library for RPG's so I can't really say, I just know that the DS has a lot of them. Plus, like I said, it also would allow you to play any RPGs from the GBA era.

EDIT: Also, between the GBA and DS, you can play a port or remake of just about every SNES Final Fantasy title.

Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Star Ocean, Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata, Infinite Undiscovery, Enchanted Arms are the JRPGs for the 360 outside of Final Fantasy which won't even come until sometime in 2010.

edit: Didn't see your edit above, Saga. The only one you don't mention is Star Ocean: The Last Hope which is coming in April.

I stand corrected then. :)
I've only played Blue Dragon from that list, but I realize I'm not a harder core RPG fan, cuz even it managed to keep my attention.
If PS2 really has that many, its a no brainer to stick with it then. That system will go down in history for that genre.

In all honesty I might have been a LITTLE harsh on Blue Dragon, specifically. I never found myself falling asleep by any means, but I found the load times combined with the general lack of differences from each character minus their base statistics which could ultimately be fixed after a certain level (60+ or so they all become the same thing anyway) to simply turn me off from extended (IE 2+hour) play.

What disappointed me the most is that even though they try very hard to make it graphically appealing, I still felt that it was designed specifically with very young children in mind - minus Jessica's bouncing bosom.

I got 72 hours out of Blue Dragon. But I still felt that it drug out a LOT at the end.

I honestly didn't try Last Remnant because everything I heard said it was a total letdown. I believe it was this review specifically which turned me:

OK, so After hacking my way through disk one, I posted a review for the last remnant based on my initial impressions. I only did so because Eric Brudvig had not yet posted the IGN review and the game had been out for about a week. I still hold that the first disc is decent if you can get through the technical problems, but boy-oh-fucking-boy does this game nose dive on disc two. If you own this game and you have not yet made it to disc two, you should trade it in. No joke, you will be forced to trudge through about three combat-less hours of fetch quests. Then you will have about ten straight hours of boring, asinine ass combat to wade into. The blot jumps the shark in stunning fashion (Amnesia and all), and frame rate issues seem to get progressively worse in the bigger boss fights.

I mean, honestly.. none of that sounds appealing in the least. With my current track record of spitting out $50 bills for 360 games, buying yet another letdown without someone at least putting in a good word for it would make me pretty stupid.

Still.. you guys seem to be completely comfortable that a game system that is going on FOUR YEARS OLD only has a list of RPG's that I can count on two hands. That doesn't bother you? Bothers the shit out of me!

It isn't the consoles fault. Seriously. There has been a complete lack of JRPGs on all three home console systems for this generation. That's the developer's and publisher's fault. For as paltry an offering of JRPGs that the 360 offers, the PS3 and Wii are worse.

This makes me incredibly sad. Am I really the dying breed of gamer? I'm 23 years old and I feel ancient as hell everytime I pull out and dust off Chrono Trigger. =/

This is the kind of thing that makes me wonder if there is any money to be made in creating my own RPG.

Gaming PC?

- Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (Steam)
- The Witcher
- mods for Fallout 3, Oblivion, Morrowind
- patches and better resolution for Star Wars KOTOR 1-2
- Neverwinter Nights 1-2, expansions, user mods

Or even a non-gaming PC for these:
- Fallout 1-2, Tactics (GOG.com)
- Baldur's Gate 1-2, expansions
- Planescape: Torment
- Icewind Dale 1-2
- Jagged Alliance 2 (technically tactical combat, but strong RPG elements)

And possibly:
- Gothic 1-2
- Arcanum

System 1: E8600 @ 4.13ghz on air, 4GB 2000mhz DDR3, twin raptor, 280gtx.
System 2: E8500 @ 3.5ghz, 4GB 1333mhz DDR2, 260gtx.
System 3: E8400 @ 3ghz, 2GB 800mhz DDR2, 8800gt SLI.

I am a hardcore PC gamer, everything from FPS to MMORPG's. I pretty much religiously separate my gaming from consoles to PC's, as I find trying to aim a FPS with a joystick to be downright retarded when given the option of the accuracy and speed of a mouse+keyboard combo. Not to mention those are the types of games that I buy for their pretty flashies so the hardware needed to run them needs to be on par.

I own all of the above listed games but Planetscape, NWN, and Oblivion/Morrowind. Those games did not interest me. Of all the rest, I consider them more RTS, not RPG's. Call them whatever you want, but The Witcher and Fallout are RTS to me, not RPG.

I do NOT enjoy RPG's on the PC. When playing an RPG, I want to sit back, relax on a couch with a controller. That and I specifically stated I enjoy the JRPG style of RPG, which is mostly menu driven combat such as Final Fantasy as opposed to more tactical games - though I very much enjoy the Lunar/Tales of Vesperia style RPG as well, as long as it's with a controller.

If you're a really hardcore RPG fan, PS3 is probably the best console to get simply because it isn't region locked. Of course, you'd have to learn Japanese. PC though is probably the best bet for American RPG fans since you have access to tons of new content and a boatload of legacy games.

It's PS2, but did you happen to play Dragon Quest VIII? IMO, one of the best RPGs to come out in the last few years.
DQIX is due out on the DS this year.
