Hello

I used to be 100% up to date on hardware available but 2 years ago i joined the military and have been confined to a laptop until now. So, i havent heard or read up on any of the rumors of the hardware thats available today and how its going or whats next in store.

I used to be a power gamer and upgraded to the most expensive piece of hardware i could afford once it came out but now i'm in the dark.

In a few months probably by February i'll be looking to build a desktop once again.

My budget will be from $1500-2000. System rig will be purely for gaming. It will be built entirely from scratch. No older parts. Normally use AMD/Nvidia, but have used both intel/ati before. Will use whatever is best now for gaming. Most of the parts i buy come from newegg but i will get them from another respected company if its moderately cheaper.

I'm looking for suggestions on what to buy these days and how i can get the most performance out of my money. I know AMD used to be better for gaming and i've always gone with them but if Intel is in the lead now i have no preference on which cpu.

Notes:
-Very comfortable with overclocking
-Would rather stay with Nvidia
-Not sure which cpu's are better these days Intel or AMD
-Havent looked at prices on Raptor HD's lately but would like at least one for the OS to be on
-Mostly likely have Vista so assuming i'll need 4GB of ram, as on my laptop Vista uses at least a gig itself.
-System will not be water-cooled, looking for suggestions on pc cases
-Will not be using SLI as i have never found the price to be worth the small performance increase
-Will need a good SB sound card

Any suggestions or anyone feeling up to the task i would appreciate any insight or tips on whats good these days. Thank you very much in advance!

The best thing to do is to start reading articles in February. The new AMD Deneb is coming out soon. Supposedly Jan and from what rumors are going around it seems the IPC are on par or better than the Yorkfield by Intel and AMD might price their cpu's cheaper. Other than that, the new i7 Nehalem is the latest by Intel but as for gaming it falls under the overpriced per performance category for me plus they run hot now that Intel made it a 4x1 core instead of the 2x2. Most call it a monolithic design. AMD says welcome to the 4x1 design. DDR3 doesn't offer real advantage over DDR2 for gaming: maybe 1% Nvidia is coming out with new cards soon. ATI/AMD will be releasing their 5870 mid summer (sooner would be better ATI/AMD) Lately the ATI cards have been marginally close to Nvidia's cards and at a cheaper price. It was funny watching New Egg drop the prices on the 280GTX when the 4870 came out. Both sides of the coin benefited from this.

btw, whats up Wadsworth; Parma here

Good Luck
