Howdy guys! A couple of my friends are starting up a little business, and I told 'em I'd help them out with their internet stuff to keep their startup costs down (we're all poor college kids). I've got the webhosting all set, and now I'm looking for ecommerce/storefront/shopping cart code to use once I've got their site all built. I've never put together an online store before, so I'm a total e-commerce n00b. I've looked through the threads here at Anandtech, and seen Miva, Storefront, and oscommerce. Also, it looks like Paypal has some pretty good stuff that is free to implement.
This business is starting out very small, and even using an open source e-commerce solution seems like overkill, but it certainly couldn't hurt them any. My question is, does anyone have any experience with any e-commerce packages that they really liked? How about ones you really hated? Also, do you think that open source solutions are just asking to get hacked by virtue of their open-sourcedness?
I would think that the simplest way to skin this cat would be to just design my own store using my mediocre html and javascripting skillz, try to make it look semi-fancy, and then use Paypal's free stuff (although you get nailed for like 3% on transactions that way). My host gave me like 10 MySQL databases, so at least I'll have that to use in the event that I find something that needs one.
What do you guys think of all this?
Thanks for reading!
