I was looking around in the forums looking for some sort of Spyware. I seen there are those which records the keystrokes, but this situation, not sure that they are typing anything. I am looking for something that could tell me things like when a computer is turned on and what is looked at. At my workplace a fellow employee has been noticing that their computer looks as if someone else is turning it on and going through their files. Yesterday he mentioned that he knew for sure he shut down completely and came in today to the famous "Windows is shutting down" screen. They are not logging into the network. It is a Windows 98 machine, so if they cancel at the network login, they will still be able to access their hard drive and the documents on it. This person has confidential information on his pc. What type of program, or where could I look to find times of when it was last turned on and perhaps which documents were looked at? I thought about having him clear out his document files and then you will see what documents were being viewed, as long as the person snooping did not delete them after looking.

I hope I posted in the right forum. I appreciate any ideas anyone could give me.

Tell him to upgrade to a secure OS if he's going to keep confidential info on the machine.

That really isn't a choice here. He is higher up in management and wants to know who is accessing his computer when he is not there. I explained to him that with 98 anyone can cancel the network login and still access his documents. Is there any system programs that shows a log of when the computer has been turned on and how long on? monitor the times? Thanks for you input.

I agree that a better OS is in order as well. 2000 and XP pro are much better are securing/encrypting user files then Win98. Still if thats not an option then some additional software is in order. You said that he wants to see who's on the computer? The only way to do that is to have a camera.

Now if he wants to track the events of what's going on there's alot of different programs to log events. I cannot speak for it but something like spyanytime may be helpful. Some programs hide better then others. Some of these are easily noticeable like a tray icon, or you can show them in the task manager. This particular app looks decent though. Its says it runs in "stealth" mode and is password protected so if someone does track it down and try to shut it off, they will be prompted by a password. works on all OS's.

It says you can demo if for free with full normal usage. Some of these spy programs give themselves away though in demo versions yet work in stealth only in licensed versions. Seems not to be the case in this one but I can't tell you until I see it or you see it.

You may want to consider locking up access to that computer too so it's password protected. But if this person wants to see whats going on first and leave the door open so to speak, then just load this program and don't lock up the computer just yet. Still, you won't be able to find out who it is unless someone sees them, or you have a secret video camera, or this spy is dumb enough to enter their name in a menu or chat or internet.

hope that helps.

When I bought my webcam a few years ago, it came with a program that would detect movement in the image and start recording frames.

Since I had it delivered to work, I hooked it up there and left it on during lunch. I caught my boss coming into my cube and grabbing some of my pretzels ;-)
