Looking for some Speakers

I will be in the market to spend about 200-300/pr. on some front channel floor standing speakers that will be hooked up to my media center pc via my AV reciever. Right now I am dealing with a really crappy $99 5.1 setup from a couple of years ago. I am basically looking for bang for the buck, knowing that a few months after I will probably purchase some rear speakers, than probably a new sub, soon after. Just looking for a little direction. Thanks.

*Edit*
I probably should state that the room is about 12´x20´

Well I know you said floorstander, but $200-$300 will give you some nicer options if you go for bookshelf speakers. If you know you're always going to be running with a sub, then you should be fine with a pair of good bookshelf speakers up front.

What is your current serup for receiver / speakers? Is the receiver one that was included in that $99 for a 5.1 system. I'd be rather worried if it was :(

For some suggestions to look at for bookshelf speakers:
AV123 x-series
SVS SBS-01
Axiom M3v2
Ascend 170

Those are getting to be a bit higher than you were looking, but going used is another great way to save some money if you're willing to do that.

Without knowing what kind of sound you like though, it would be pretty tough to try to pick something out online.

Going in to some retail stores and listening to some different options might give you an idea of what kind of sound you like.

Paradigm, Klipsch, Boston Acoustics, Monitor Audio, and a few others should have bookshelf speakers in this range.

As for floorstanders, it would be tough to find a set of floorstanders from brands like these. You might be able to find something from Polk (I know they sell R30s for $50/each, which is way under budget for you), Infinity (Primus line), JBL (Northridge series), etc.

I have an older (might upgrade as well soon) decent JVC reciever that puts out 100w per channel. Right now, just from what you showed me I have narrowed down to two of them:
AV123´s
SVSound

Any personal expierence with either? They will be for mainly movie watching and some music, with the posiblity of gaming at a later date, though I usually just use the headphones for that.

I've tried out the X-LS and am using them in an office system right now.

I'm pretty impressed with them for how much they cost. I can see why they've won numerous "speaker of the year" awards. AV123 has started risk free trials, so in the even that you order these and don't like them, AV123 will take them back within 30 days and will even cover shipping both ways.

I've used a few SVS products in the past and present, but have not tried their speakers before.

I think either would be a solid bet.

I was able to piece together a decent 5.1 system by buying Polk speakers when Frys.com had their deals on them, which they still run every few months. Here's what I got:

Fronts: R50 - $198/pr after shipping
Center: CSi25 - $82 after shipping
Surrounds: R15 - $50/pr after shipping
Sub: Polk PSW350 - $110 after shipping on eBay

So, I spent $440 on all of the speakers and about $200 on the Panasonic XR55s receiver. I would've gone with a refurb Onkyo receiver, but my wife hated the way they looked, so I had get something a little more stream-lined.

I really like my system. There are definitely better systems out there, but I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better 5.1 setup without going used. I went used on the sub, but everything else was new. If you do try to get in on the deals at Frys.com, here are a couple of things to note. One is that they sell the R50 in cherry but everything else in black. If this bothers you, then you might not want to get them. Also, the R30 is the same as the R50 except that it has only 1 woofer, is a little bit cheaper, and is a little smaller (I think). The R150 and the R300 are just newer versions of the R15 and the R30, respectively. The R15 are sold in pairs. The R30 and the R50 are sold individually. If you order 2 of the R50 or R30, you'll save on shipping if you split them into two separate orders.

Good luck!
