Looking for some speaker advice

I just picked up a pioneer vsx d912k 6.1 receiver (specs) and am looking for a nice speaker setup to compliment it. the receiver will power my pc sound as well as my tv, dvd player,, and turntables.
I currently have a pair of rather large floor speakers with 10" woofers... no idea what the specs are on those, they're about 30 years old.
what would be a good speaker to use for the rear channels? center channels? sub? i'm not exactly rich but am willing to spend a fair amount if the product is good.
i've thought about some of the pc speaker setups like the logitech z-5500, but i think i'd rather get the speakers individually since i want to keep my two floor speakers to use in stereo mode. the surround setup will be used mainly for dvds and games; music will be played in stereo for the most part.
any advice would be excellent! thanks.

Cool. I just picked up a floor model Pioneer 1014 from Best Buy a few days ago to power my Onix Rockets, but that's probably a little more than you're wanting to spend on speakers.

First of all, if you haven't checked out AVSforum or hometheaterforum, I would highly suggest going over there too to get some more advice.

Ideally you'd want all 5 speakers in your HT system to be from the same company and the same series of speakers so that they would all be timbre matched and panning effects wouldn't sound strange because all the speakers would have the same sonic characteristics.

The surrounds don't matter much for this though, because most panning effects are a left to right or right to left motion so the matching for the front 3 is more important.

It's not a huge issue though, so if you want to keep your current speakers, that's fine.

A good center channel is very important for DVDs. Something like 70% to 80% of the sound in a DVD movie is coming out the center channel.

Off the top of my head, a great deal on some speakers that are being discontinued (I think) from Onix (the company that I just bought my own speakers from) is happening.

You can get a set of RS150s in ebony and an RSC100MKII (probably in ebony too to match) for $400 + shipping. I think these are about half their normal price right now and were a good deal to start with.

The guys at AV123 are great. If you have any questions about their stuff or HT in general, they're always willing to help.

At those prices, I think it's going to be hard to get a better 3 speaker set. It's such a good deal that you might want to think about getting a whole 5.1 set and replace your 30 year old speakers. Maybe order the first three and then do a comparison (with a sub to cover the low end) between the RS150s and your current speakers. If you like the sound of the RS150s better, you could pick up a second pair and make a matched 5.0 set for yourself (just a thought ;)).

Alternatively, if you just want something to produce sound, justdeals sells 3 speakers from a z-680 set for $35.

There are lots of options in between too :)

If you can go to an audio store and demo some speakers to see what kind sounds good to you, that would be a good idea too. I've been told that the higher end Rockets sound similar to the Paradigm Studio series. I'm not sure about the lower end Rockets.

For a sub, there are a lot of options too.
A good subwoofer adds a lot to movies. After the center, I'd say a sub is tied for importance with the front stereo speakers.
For something along the lines of the Logitech prices, I'd recommend the dayton 10" from partsexpress. It's a nice sub that goes pretty deep and served me well while I had it. Until you get into the $250-ish range, it's really hard to beat that dayton.
So, once you get to the $250-ish range, there are some other good options (Like the JBL e150), but at that point it's almost better to just move up to the $400-ish level and get what many call the "entry level HT subs".

At the $400-ish level, some really good options are the SVS PB10 (I own that one currently) and the HSU STF-2.

I'm not sure if any of these suggestions would fit into your "fair amount" criteria, but it's a start. I've been reading up on a lot of different products up into about the $3000 range for a set of speakers so I have a good idea of what's good for the money.

I'm not an expert, but I can point you in the right direction if you have any other questions :).

Thanks a lot for the info. Those onix speakers look really nice. I think i will do some more research on those. that is about the price range I was looking for. I hope that deal lasts till the 12th or so, since I'll be out of town for a bit before then. thanks also for linking me to those forums, I will definately check them out.

I'm not sure how long the deal will last, but if you e-mail AV123, I'm sure they'll let you know their plans.

AV123 also has a forum of its own if you want to check that out.

Some other manufacterers to check out would be
Axiom
Swan
Ascend Acoustics

Axiom is probably the closest to your pricerange though.

did you replace the HK? If so what were you thinking? I still stand by my opinion that people that think the 1014 is the same as the 52tx are crazy. Theres simply no way, and there have been many posts dealing with these crapping out easily in surges.

Jello gave some good options. I would also recommend Axiom M22ti's. They get great reviews. I would gladly help you if you wanted to build some speakers from scratch though ;)

I don't know too mcuh about headphones either. I would gladly help you if you wanted to build some speakers though ;)

I did some polling on different forums, e-mailed the guys at AV123, and looked at the specs of each and yeah, I replaced my HK :p

I explained the whole situation in a thread and didn't get much of a response.

I like a few features of the 1014 like component upconversion so I don't have to run as many wires to my projector.

I'm aware of the surge issue, but that seems to be the only issue I was able to find that might affect me.

I basically needed to go out and get a $300-ish receiver, and I found a 1014 floor model and picked it up, and then after a lengthy decisionmaking process decided to keep the 1014 and sell the HK.

I don't know if this is any indicaiton of the 52tx-ness of it, but in my own personal experience I was unable to find the manual for the 1014 on Pioneer's site so I got the manual for the 52tx and all the codes and everything worked. I'm not sure if it's throughout Pioneer's line that pressing certain sequences of buttons enables certain things, but the 52tx codes worked on my 1014.

I was told conflicting opinions from lots of people and when it came down to it, the couple of features on the 1014 and it being newer tilted me towards keeping it rather than the HK.

Well I can't wait for when I will be able to purchase a HK 435, basically a 635 with a bit less power but we all know how powerful HK amps are. I'll be sure to show it off in a month or so ;).

Musta missed your thread on that, I woulda said to keep the HK. But as long as your happy.

Yeah, it was a tough decision.

One of my complaints about the HK was the really long delay whenever it switched between surround modes. Not a huge deal, but I'd miss about 1/3 of THX intros and if a movie had a commentary at the beginning of it, I'd miss the first sentence or two (when it switched from Pro Logic to DD from the menu to the movie).

So, it was kind of a toss up between the two... and I needed to give that family something that I knew worked that night so I gave them my own and was planning on testing the Pioneer and seeing if I liked it. I did like it, so rather than going through the hassle of getting the old one back and comparing them, I decided to just keep the Pioneer.

Well, the RS150s sold out sometime during the day today and the site reads that they are discontinued. Looks like the deal is dead :(
