Looking for some quiet fans

-bought a rack mount case
-need a specific size fan

Posted in the general forum (here ) before I did some more research. What I discovered is that the fans in the case (Intel SR2400) are Delta fans model TFB0612GHE (tech specs for anybody curious) and it's a little on the loud side at 64dB each. Now I have 4 of these and my boss along with my ears are telling me to find a quieter solution. My first thought was buy a glass case and put it over the rack enclosure with a larger one over that and create a vacuum between the two thus getting rid of all the noise. Boss didn't like that idea.

However I had thought if we could replace the fans with slower, quieter fans, than that will be the easiest answer. The problem is the fans have a special attachment that turns out to be not so special. Taking it apart it is just a housing for the wires to connect to the fan housing. (very well designed case). Because the housing can't be changed, the fans have to be 60x38mm.

Anyway I'm looking for a quieter 60x38mm fan. Found one by YS Tech but I'm not sure of the quality. I've heard Delta makes good (but loud) fans and it pushes alot of air. I just don't want to get quiet fans only to find out my case is overheating.

I looked at several e-tailers I buy at and nothing in 60x38.

You might plod through the pdf catalog at mouser.com as they stock gads of fans.

For keeping air flow at a marked reduction in dBA up-rating to 80mm would be the answer,
*IF* you have room for addapters.

EDIT: You will find spec on several 60x60x38 here...Text
The 38s have the red * by the CFM number.

60x38mm fans are generally screamers - the Deltas being the screamiest. Try a Sunbeam Rheobus fan controller instead of new fans - $10. at jab-tech.com (not the 3.5" one as it is PWM and may not work well with some fans). And you could try 60x25mm fans. a few dabs of hot glue would hold them in place inside the cages.

I hate to break it to you, but unless you're prepared to performs serious modifications to that enclosure, or transfer the guts to a larger 4u or 5u enclosure that can use quieter fans, you're screwed.

If you reduce the airflow significantly, it'll overheat- just the nature of dual xeon systems... the only reason it'll fit in a 2u enclosure is because of the screaming fans.

Might want to investigate a soundproof door... might have to soundproof the whole room...

That's what we're afraid will happen. We are only using 1 xeon proc though. We ordered 4 38mm fans that push half as much air but are only 42dB. We'll see how they preform. We figure the system as a whole will run hotter but they are installing an ac unit that will only be for the server room which is the size of a large closet (which is where I work). If we can keep it nice and cold, I'm thinking that should help makeup whatever cooling we lose with the slower fan.
