I will be getting a new system in July, I will have around 1500 to spend. I would like a DDR setup with an AMD cpu . Other than that no specifics, just want some opinions besides my own.

I dont think Im going to built it, I think Im going to purchase it from a company. Im thinkin a Dell Dimension, but there might be better things out there......

i dont know hwo you plan on getting a amd system from dell 😛

anyyywayyy.

if you catch the right deal on dell.com it can be cheaper than building your own system, and NOT a pain in the ass
get this,

1.6 p4
128 mb ram ddr pc2100
wireless keyboard/mouse
geforce2 w/ 64mb ddr
some onboard sound
some 100mbit nic
8x cdr
a BADASS case, it makes almost NO noise, NO heat
The cables are routed on the side of the case, very well put together
floppy
56k modem
uhh, i know im forgeting something

40 gig 7200rpm hdd

shipped to my door for 480$

after a 100 rebate,

ive since put my 24x plextor/ 16x dvdrom, 512 more memory

I guess thats it, but you can NOT beat that danm price. i dont care how geeky you are.

btw, if it didnt work the first time i turned it on, all i do is call dell and they take care of it 🙂 no hassles.
if ANY hardware breaks, i just have dell send a courier to come pick it up, no hassles.

for my needs, this is perfect. My custom toy is in the over room acting as a server, becuase it wasnt very stable as a client. used to crash like once every 2 days. now, i just leave it in the other room in the closet and use terminal services to connect to it. it doesnt even have a moniter

I was going to buy a Dell system last summer, but didn't because I wanted AMD and that wasn't an option. Dell did send out a questionaire a number of months back to poll about interest in AMD systems, so word was they were thinking about it.

My advice, if you can, build your own system, I ended up building 3 last summer. You will learn a lot and upgrading down the road will be soo much easier.

If you don't mind being your own tech support, build your own. It's fun and you will learn a lot. Just remember, you have a ton of people right here who will try to help with whatever problems you may have.

Enlight 72370AZ w/ 340W $60
Epox 8kha+ $89
AMD Athlon XP 1900+ Retail $156
512MB Crucial, Mushkin, or Corsair DDR ~180
WD 800BB 7200rpm 80GB $115
Leadtek or Gainward Geforce 4 Ti4400 ~250
Sony 52X CD-ROM $25
Lite-On 40\12\48 CDRW $99
Sony floppy drive $9
Good 19" monitor ~275
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer $33
Good keyboard $25

This comes to about $1300 before shipping from newegg.com
Add a sound card and some good speakers and it will put you a little over $1500

Of course if you aren't buying until July, your choices will be different.

Watch for the KT333A or KT400 boards to come out. And the Athlon Thoroughbreds may be out by then.

I don't think you'll be getting a Dell if you want an AMD system anytime soon. That said if you do want an AMD system I'd wate till the new AMD come out this summer you will not fell like you need to upgrade so soon but this is just a thought If that money is burning a whole in your pocet try price whatch.com and do some shopping.
