Looking for some insite

Bleep

Diamond Member
I have been thinking about leaving the seti@home team for the following reason.
There have been several team members that have been posting that Liberals hate america including myself and that I am a coward and a trator to my country because I am a Democrat. Only in the last few weeks have I responded to these statements.
In one thread that questioned my patrotism I stated my military experience and that one of my sons has been returned to me in a body bag only to be told that " great one less liberal to deal with" this statement was from one of the seti team here. I think that the attitude of these team members is common on the forum, I am asking for a little insite on wether my reason is sufficient or not. I have been a member of the Distributing team since the 2nd day it started, crunching rc5 until the Georgia fiasco.

🙂

Bleep, I feel that the TeAm transcends all political ideologies as it does nationality. As stated in my PM to you a minute ago - the P&N forum gets a bit heated and people polarize themselves - so much so, that they defend things or ideas that they themselves don't really agree with only to spite the other side 😉

Whoever made those comments you was "wrong" to say such things and I wish to extend my apology in place of his/hers🙂 I thank you for your service to our country and also to you son who gave the ultimate sacrifice to defend/preserve this great nation.

I agree with CADkindaGUY!! I don't know why someone would make that sort of statement to you, but it was definately out of line.

I also personally want to thank you, for your service to our country, and am very grateful to those like your son, who sacrificed so much for our freedoms.

Thank you!!!!!!

Bleep don't hold the statements of one person against the whole team. Take in to consideration that the person questioning your patriotism is the real non patriot. What makes America great is our ability to express our dissent with the majority, the government or anyone else we feel like. Anyone who believes otherwise is the true definition of Anti-American.

I avoid the P&N forum because I don't believe it is very beneficial to argue politics on a bulletin board.

I definitely agree with what Crazee has said. Additionally, a patriot is someone who has a love for their country; this can be expressed as a dissent from the majority opinion, if "you" feel differently than "they" do about what is best for the country. I also feel strongly that the person who used such an insult against you should receive at least a temporary vacation, but the P&N forum is so loosely moderated (despite what the title description says) that that is unfortunately unlikely. 🙁

I only go there to read dmcowen... (what's that number on the end of his username?)... 's legal news posts, but I stay out of the political threads most of the time because I seem to get attacked and insulted from extremists on both sides, and I'd rather not waste time with it and raise my blood pressure unnecessarily. :frown:

Base your political views on what you were taught, not on the boasts and brags of radicals. Mud slinging and insults just stirs up hate and controversy. Beside Seti in not a political project and its intent is for the betterment of mankind.

Wow this is disturbing. This is also why I do not go into those forums. Every person has the freedon to have the opinions that they have, but in a forum, it is also easy to ignore other peoples opinions and try to force yours with insults and such. No one would ever have the balls big enough to say "great one less liberal to deal with" to your face, and a comment like that would deserve a nice broken jaw! My brother also came home in a body bag while serving his country. So a-holes like that can have their freedom of speach! Do what you feel is right. But remember that those are the opinions of a few of the members and not the whole. With over 2000 seti TeAm members, you are bound to find a few cowardly schmuks that would say such horrific things. I also get a sick feeling when I hear that statement "great one less liberal to deal with". I would have to question that persons patriotism and make the assumption that this person is nothing more than a peice of sh!t spoiled little baby who is probably the same sort of person that would pick a fight with someone with his words and then run and hide behind someone so they don't get beat up. Anyone who blatantly disrespects those who serve this country should be ashamed of them selves and get NO respect from me! It's because of the men and women who have fought and died for this country that we can have this freedom of speach. So to the person that made that remark, just remember that. You have that right because of the men and women of the military, so dont abuse it.

I could go on and on about this because it has me pretty fired up. Just know that you can get away with crap like that from the safety of your keyboard, but if you would have been in the same room with me and made that remark, I would have dropped you faster than you could even imagine.

<FONT face=Verdana size=1>Bleep, you are a member of our team! As a hole, we on the team feel your pain :brokenheart:
</FONT>
It saddens me to think, that "one" can stoke the fire of hatred, when as a whole we try to spark the flames of friendship. Together we seek the future of mankind. Do what you must, but we want you with us.

"great, one less liberal to deal with"? If the member who say such a thing would quit the team, I'd have one less a-hole on my team. Don't quit.

Bleep, I know that on occasions we have had a few heated words (well, from what I can remember anyway). I also have felt that you do have some very strong views, whether I agree with them or not!! 🙂 However, leaving a huge group of mainly nice, kind, friendly people such as are here on this TeAm, due to the viewpoints of one or two individuals, is hurting those kind people. The a-holes that have such little respect for the people that give their lives for the freedom of their country are not going to mind if you leave, however the ones here who respect that, and you, will be very sad to see you go, including me. Your levelheadedness in your views to some points makes me sit up and think, and sometimes retract from saying something that I could have regretted.

Bleep, I am very sorry for the loss of your son, I can't even begin to imagine how you must be feeling 🙁 I would be hurt if you were to leave due to the actions of one or two people on these forums, as we would be losing a long time, good member.

I don't even have the P&N forum listed on my login, I have got rid of it in my Profile, as having it there would give me the temptation to go there, and see the side of people that I may not want to see.

Most people are morons. Most morons like to talk profusely not matter what the topic. Anyone who would say something like "great one less liberal to deal with" deserves a severe beating. Seriously. That is really upsetting. I'll just hope that a 12-year-old said that and will someday grow up to regret it.
I don't agree in any way with the whole "un-american" trend that is trying to be passed off as patriotic. I think Bush is a great leader and don't really have any complaints with the administration, but labelling people un-american because of disagreement is silly.
Bleep, I'd stick with the team. If there is harrassment ignore it. Avoid the political board.

Bleep,

Even though I'm new here, I'll offer a few suggestions.

First, remember where you are. While most of the team would never condone the comments you were subjected to, you should remember that you were in an open forum that gives a voice to the most noble thoughts AND the most insufferable. As most of the responses suggest, consider avoiding such areas if you are offended. If that one topic was all there was to this forum and team, I would heartily recommend you leave. But it is not, so avoidance is very possible.

Second, they are everywhere. If you leave this team, you will likely find the same sort of person or persons in the next team or group you join. Someone said there is always one in the crowd.

Third, don't cut off your friends to spite your foes. Since the people who know and respect you and your opinions didn't say those things to you and don't support them, don't punish them as if they did by leaving. Tell your acquaintances about the shortsightedness of the errant teammate and let them all support you in berating the moonshucking, backaddled blastard.

I hope that aids you in your search for insite.

Yeah, there are always 1 or 2 or more in every crowd.
At work, on the road etc......................

Bleep your pods are rallying around you and circling the wagons.:sun:
Also, that was a really really crappy thing to say.:disgust:

Hope you are feeling better.:sun:

Hi there!

I am not a member of this team (hope I am allowed to post here 🙂), but your story reminded me of something that happened to my daughter a while back. She had won third place in an essay contest on the subject of "What is Patrotism?" that was sponsored by the local American Legion. She won $15, which for a 14 yr old was okay, but the honor was the recognition for her thoughts on patrotism, and we agreed whole heartly. The first, second and third place winners were invited to the hall to read their essays to the membership. We came, myself, my fiance, my daughter (of course) and my parents. We were so proud of her and were looking forward to a wonderful evening.

The night came and we arrived to find out we were the only ones of the three place winners to show up. The event started with a general meeting of folks and introductions. We were hounded for information to see if we qualified for membership. To join the American Legion you must have an immediate member of the family who served in the service during time of war. None of us had qualified, and this was by no fault of our own, just so happens that we are a large family of girls, and the men in our family were too young or too old during the wars that qualified. My uncle served in Vietnam, but he wasn't immediate enough. Suddenly it felt like we were wasting their time. Perception is reality.

Anyway, they then went on to start the meeting. It started with the Pledge of Allegiance. We all stood up, my fiance removed his hat and we all placed our hands on our hearts and said the pledge. I was so proud of my daughter and watched her as she proudly said the pledge. 🙂

Then she was asked to read her essay. We took pictures and watched as she was awarded her prize.

We waited through the meeting, and then socialized with the members. Then the bomb hit. We were accussed by the woman who organized this event of not being patriotic! Why? Because she did not hear us saying the pledge! I looked at her like she was nuts, and told her that of course we said it. I was in so much shock that I didn't say much more. The bad part of this was how disappointed my daughter was in this, it was in direct contradiction to why she was there! We were so upset we left immediately.

I have come to understand that was only one person, and NOT the feelings of the entire membership of the lodge... however it is hard to convince my daughter of that. That hurt will remain forever.

Bleep, you have paid the ULTIMATE sacrifice in the name of Patrotism! Do not let one or two sh!theads change anything for you. The problem with the internet is that some people feel it gives them the freedom to say whatever they want, even if they would NEVER say it to your face.

Remember: The Cream rises to the top, but then again SH!T floats too.... so you get to see the best of the best as well as the worst of the worse.

I am a staunch Conservative. And while I honestly believe that Liberals are bringing about the death of this country, what was said by these people to you is not just insensitive and wrong, but just plain mean. There's no excuse for that, and I hope you don't take the rantings of some a-holes to represent the concensus of the TeAm. I hope you stay with us. 🙂

Hey Bleep,

I hope you are able to take whatever nonsense some folks are throwing at you on here with a grain of salt and let it go. The views of many are on here and all over the place that just recently a Politics and News section was created to help contain the zaniness to one area. It is also a good place for serious discussion as well since it is a serious subject as you atest here that the musings of some can get to you.

I survived with people against me as well as for me on here and more than once. Recently many people were against me saying that putting the word of a website under my name as a signature is considered Spamming both the person that views the word as well as Spamming the site itself. That means under new State DMCA Laws that posting the word alone is subject to Felony counts with more than life imprisonment as well as millions in fines and damages.

Edit: PS I cannot even think of appropriate words to say on the loss of your son.

Here is a little insight to the number on the end of dmcowen674. It is a personal thing that I am glad to share with everyone here and another thing that should be in my book that I must finish.

If anyone here has seen the movie Frequency they would understand this a little better.

My Dad and I communicated via CB radio in the 1970's on his drive back and forth from work, his drive was about 25 miles each direction. Typical CB reception is 5-10 miles depending on a lot of things. Anyway we belonged to a local CB club and our numbers were assigned. 636 and 674. It is easier to hear numbers through static and to keep tranmissions short too, so when I heard his numbers I knew he was either coming in range or going out of range. For example 636 10-10 means he has arrived at his location, if he said 636 10-10 and 10-100 I knew he is on location and going to the Restroom. I used to know the whole 10 code by heart. 10-36 is "What is the Time?"
10-4 we all know that is "I heard you loud and clear."

Anyway I picked dmcowen674 for my AOL ID because the system always insisted on adding numbers on the end of a word that you would like to use on the system. I used my AOL address for my ID when downloaded the RC5 program. The State subpoenad AOL for the E-mail transactions between the School Computers and the RC5 Clients back to Distributed.net. This was thier case showing that the tiny 10-30 byte E-mails cost the State 59 cents a second to transmit back and forth. I had the AOL address since AOL became AOL because I was an outside Engineer for them. I worked with their Engineers by giving them the Modem String Combinations for many different Modems when I worked at Hayes Modems. I lost my AOL account because of the State case.
