Hey everyone,

I built a system a few years ago running the following:
- Intel 4930K
- MB Asus Sabretooth x79
- Corsair H100i
- SSD Samsung 840 Pro Series 512 GB
- NVidia Geforce GTX 1080
- 32gb DDR3 1866 Corsair Platinum Series
- Corsair AX1200i Power Supply

I use this entirely for gaming and have never overclocked it, I've tried setting the Bios to performance mode but everytime I do the system freezes after an hour or so and i'm prompted to go back into the BIOS and reset it back to what it was.

I'm currently thinking about upgrading to 7700k or 6850k or even going with X299 (basically i'm open to any CPU under $1k) and adding m.2 drives but wondering if it's worth it based on what I currently have or if I should wait and overclock. I have no idea what / how to overclock as i'm worried about screwing things up.

Any advice would be greatly apreciated!

Thanks

If you're only gaming, and not into overclocking, I would look at either a 7700K system or something AMD Ryzen-based as of now. While X299 does look quite good, the chips won't be out for a while yet, and while its IPC is better than Ryzen, I'd argue it's not enough to warrant the price difference. A $350 (currently) 1700X and a $200 motherboard will get you something like 80-85% (probably more in some metrics) of the performance of a 7820X for less money than the 7820X alone.

On the other hand, if you want the better IPC and higher clocks of Intel, the 7700K does both those for the same price as the Ryzen above. Half the cores/threads, but that won't matter too much in games at least in the next few years. Then again, I'd argue against buying Kaby Lake right now simply due to Coffee Lake in all likelihood launching in a few months, giving you six cores without moving to the more expensive X299 platform. X299 also has you paying for quad channel memory (which makes motherboards far more complex and more expensive), while giving you exactly zero gains in gaming.

Then again, if you have the money to burn, the 7820X does look pretty great. Just get a good cooler. If it's anything like the 6700/7700K, it'll run hot.
