Looking for some HD suggestions.

Hello all. In August I purchased a WD Caviar 750GB Serial ATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3G and it's been a good, speedy drive. However it sounds like my computer is trying to make a cup of coffee everytime I boot up or the hard drive is accessing anything. Just not happy with the volume at this point. Is their any recommended replacements that don't sound like a grinder or coffee machine? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you're concerned with HD noise, I'd get something with the least amount of platters, or maybe even a low-rpm (5400RPM) drive but of course you're going to get a performance hit. In your situation I'd get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152181. My roommate has this drive and it is pretty quiet.

Also another thing to note, what case do you have? I have an Antec Solo with the rubber-band type mounting solution, and my WD 640GB Black drive, is much quieter in this type of mounting as compared to conventional screw on metal.

Your correct. Don't want to go 5400RPM, and the drive does not need to be completely quiet but when it's the loudest part in my build it gets annoying. I have an Antec 600 case, and the HD does screw in so perhaps that's a factor, but still the drive is just loud. Thanks for the recommendation.

I have a 1TB Samsung F3 and a 1TB Caviar Black. The Samsung is much quieter, and its a little faster too. Negatives are potentially slightly more chance of failure and only 3yr warranty vs 5yr, but the Caviar Black is usually quite a bit more $$$.

Samsung F3 drives are quieter than WD Black so that is an option. If you are otherwise satisfied with your existing drive, perhaps experiment with decoupling it from your case? This means there can't be a rigid connection between the drive and the case. Cases designed with this typically have grommets that the screws pass through so there is no metal-on-metal action. (sounds so sexy!) If your case doesn't support this from the factory, you have to get imaginative. First thing to try (to see if it will help) is to temporarily remove your HDD from the bay and set it somewhere on something soft like those foam sheets that comes with some motherboards. Have the drive hooked up but sitting on the soft material maybe on the bottom of a 5.25" drive bay or something - as long as the metal of the HDD doesn't touch the metal of the case.

Use your computer and see if it is quiet enough. If so, then pursue this option (just keep an eye on drive temperatures - they will go up). If not, start saving up them clams for a new, quieter drive.
