I am looking for some speakers for my iPod Mini that I can take with me. I want something <$100, and with good bass response. I used to take my altec lansing vs2121's with me, but I am using them for my computer now, and I am not really happy with the constant hiss they produce while plugged in.

Cliffs

1. Want iPod speakers with good bass response
2. don't mind carrying around a subwoofer
3. highest quality for under $100

You're a Linux user and have an ipod? *brain explodes*

Actually I'm an aspiring linux user and have one, but mine was free. Anyway, bass takes juice. Portable = runs on batteries. See the conflict of interest here?

If by good bass response you mean lots of boomy bass, the Logitech z-2300s would give you lots of that and are right around $100.

Aren't vs2121's powered?

ummm...he needs to take the speakers with him.

how is a subwoofer or any powered speaker system portable? plus a budget of $100 for portable ipod speakers will be difficult, given the gross overpricing of all ipod accessories.

I guess you didn't read his whole post:

"Cliffs

"

Edit: And it isn't like you would have to get portable speakers made exactly for the iPod...

There are probably outlets where he wants to take these I'm guessing as the set he's been using is a powered set.

Yeah, I do have an outlet where I want to take them, and yes, the vs2121's are powered.

EDIT: those logitechs look good, but I'm sorry I forogt to mention, the subwoofer has to be able to fit in my backpack:). That's the only reason I bought the vs2121's.

EDIT2: I'm not a linux user, I just found that quote on a bumper sticker and thought I would put it in my sig.

Well, bass performance is related to enclosure size... If you want something with better bass than you're current set, you're probably going to be looking at units with larger sub enclosures and also larger driver sizes for the sub.

Asking for good bass and then putting a size limitation on the sub is kind of shooting yourself in the foot.

If you can't fit a large sub, maybe some bookshelf speakers would be a better option for you.

A pair of Polk R15s would leave you $40 or so to find a way to power them. A sonic t-amp would be a portable option for size (and actually battery powered unless you get a wall wart to power it). It might not get too loud though due to a rather low power output...

You might be able to find a small integrated amp or receiver that's small enough to fit in your backpack off ebay for that much.

Sonic T-amp looks like it pumps at 9 watts at 8ohms. That's still 106db at the listening position with no room gain at full volume at 2 feet away D

Although, since they are bookshelves, they might require a bit more distance for proper dispersion. A pair of Klipsch 2.0 Ultras might work a little better since they are very directional and have reasonable bass response down to 50hz at -10db.

I think it's more like 5watts for an 8ohm load. Still should be enough though :)

I wonder how it would sound at 10W ^o^

The sound of your speakers dying ;)

What's wrong with a Linux user owning an iPod?

I think he answered it in his post...something about Linux user and "paying for a media product."
