I've looked at doing some small freelance jobs. It seems hard to compete with cheap overseas labor, unless you're willing to work for minimum wage or less. Maybe I've just been looking in the wrong places though.

You could always advertise your services on elance.

But whether you will find a contract is another question. A lot of people on there who are developers have impressive resumes.

This. There are guys in India who are willing to program for so cheap, that most places will just hire several of them instead of 1 of us, regardless of how good or bad they are.

Check craig's list. I have seen places that advertise they are looking for a programmer, but they sure don't want to pay the price a "professional" prices. Most likely web development stuff.
