Its been a long time since Ive done any major updating and wanted to get some suggestions. IE still running an old opty 170 on my music computer (DAW) computer and a q6600 on my main rig.
Ive been wanting to update my DAW rig but after reading for days and realizing im a poor boy ($200-$300 for a cpu and or motherboard O.O) not sure what might be the better direction to go.
The wife got a new computer for xmas thanks to her dad (amd 6 core 8 gig of memory etc) Im not allowed to touch it but I have some of her old stuff to play with.
It was an old e5200 with a gigabyte p35 board but uses the ddr2 memory I couldn't find any thing that really showed me any benefit other then memory speed and win 7 capability to use that cpu and mb for the DAW computer but I loose my raid option. Ive looked at a few of the package deals for the amd and intel chips but I really dont see anything that really gets my goat. I know you really can't compare 2005 tech to 2012 I just remember when everyone was on the q6600 hype and I fell into it after getting it I really didn't see a performance gain over the old opty when it came to encoding, even when I was doing alot in 3ds and Photoshop both systems felt the same. I know im an archive but even generals or tomb raider played the same. I tried quake III but just not my thing. About the only improvement I saw back then was upgrading to the old 8800gt vid card. Then I could tell a visual diff. But again once I changed the opty to the same vid card no real improvement.
The specs on both systems are as follows.
Amd opty 170
asus a8nsli delux
4 gig ddr
wd rapture main drive
2 t tbyte drives on raid 1
m-audio sound card
8800gt 512 vid
intel Q6600
asus p5q
4 gig ddr2
wd rapture main drive
2 640 wd blacks on raid 1
9800gt 512 old 8800gt died
As this turns into a long book, anyhow your opinions.
Is it worth using the e5200 cpu and mb in the DAW machine or should I just move the q6600 setup over to daw and slowly peace meal a new main rig.
Programs I use on my main system are
CS5
3dsmax
Might try Maya if I can talk my brother out of his copy lol
Gaming wise not really much
I have assassin creed III
command and conquer, (yes Im old)
might try skyrim not sure yet
Wife plays second life so some of that too.
The DAW system uses Pro Tools, Frooty loops, Acid dj (pro) and some other music mixing programs. It also inputs my keyboard and pioneer stuff.
