looking for some advice

I have had this computer for about a year, and i figure its a good time to upgrade, im noticing 512 mb doesnt cut it anymore, and i would really like to get into those 800mhz fsb processors/ram

I have this setup right now

Asus P4T533-C
Pentium 4 2.26 GHZ (533 FSB)
512 MB RDRAM 1066 MHZ
Geforce4 Ti4600

Planning on going to this

Asus P4C800-E
Pentium 4 2.80 Ghz (800 FSB) HT Technology
2048 MB Crucial DDR400 Memory (4 x 512 MB)
Hercules ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (Retail)

Decent upgrade?... Ive noticed my current system to not be cutting it lately, sure i can run games pretty good, but the latest MMORPG's etc are massive memory hogs... 2 Gigs of ram should be okay <grin>

Figure ill ditch the Geforce4 and ride the Radeon bandwagon, plus get the Hyper Threading and 800 FSB technology...

Will the 800 FSB, Hyper Threading help that much with my gaming?, im not really satisfied with how my current system is doing in some of the newest games out... like Star Wars Galaxies, Horizons, some of the newer MMORPGS, it chugs along like video lag and i notice my memory to be real low?.... its not a bad system just wanted to pop some new things into and be set until next year or so... do you think this upgrade is worth it?...

Your new system will be 10x better at SWG. That's all I can say. Other than that, not a massive upgrade. And 2GB of ram seems like overkill, you'd prolly be ok w/ 1GB. But if you have the money to burn, why not?

Figure ram is so cheap nowadays might as well pop in some more wont hurt it lol.... will that 800 FSB be that much better then a 533 FSB? how well does the DDR400 ram perform against 1066 RDRAM?....

Will hyper threading improve the gaming performance?... I want something good that will last until my next upgrade... ive noticed my system slowing down on medium detail in some games mainly those MMORPGS 🙂....

Well, the 9800 Pro will help the most. But SWG is a memory hawg, and so to that end, the extra bandwidth provided by the 800mhz FSB should be highly beneficial. If you really wanted to push it, you could go for some PC4000 RAM, to overclock your FSB, thus raising both your processor speed and memory bandwidth. Also note that SWG is multithreaded, and takes advantage of multiple processors (Hyperthreading included.)

All kinda depends on how you feel about overclocking.

And i have DSL so my connection is fine, has to be the system... I figure this new upgrade would be worth it to me, does anyone have other opinions? Well i never overclocked before so im kind of weary about that....

OCing is really an average thing these days, especially among people who come here. While I personally don't overclock my main system (I have) because I don't run anything that bogs me down, I have no fears or doubts about OCing.

There are wealths of info about overclocking available at the main Anandtech site, and of course here on the forums. You could reasonably expect to get more than 3.2ghz out of that 2.8ghz chip. Only real cost is the more expensive RAM and the need for a nicer CPU heatsinkfan.

i'll probably just leave everything at stock settings, hopefully soon when i get that new system... if something bogs down i will over clock it most likely... also the crappy motherboard i have now only support agp 4x 😛.... how much of a performance increase can one get from going to an agp 8x motherboard like the new one i have listed?

Zero performance increase from 4xAGP to 8xAGP. No difference whatsoever. Sorry.

If you plan on staying at stock speeds, you might want to hold off until the end of the month when Intel will drop the price of the P4 3.0ghz down around $300. Whether or not you're going to overclock SHOULD be considered before you buy, seeing as how that will effect your processor\memory choices.

thanks for the answers, i will wait and see... when that 3.0 ghz drops to $300 at the end of the month...

actually the 3ghz chip is around $380, i might go for 1 gig of ram and use the money to get that cpu instead of the 2.8

how does this sound? good upgrade for now?

200 MHz really isn't too much. Why not just get some quality ram and bump up the fsb a bit.

AGP8X gives a few tenths of a frame or a frame or so. Not exactly 0 difference but like a single digit small percent increase. On Tom's VGA Chart, the AGP 8X Ti-4200 128MB was a teeny bit faster than the higher clocked 64MB Ti-4200 and the 128MB 4X Ti-4200.

im upgrading from a 2.2 ghz to a 3 ghz, getting 512 more ram and a new video card 🙂 i was planning on bumping my fsb and getting good ram...

i need a new motherboard, cpu/ram to do that... its a 800 mhz increase not 200... i was originally gonna go to a 2.8 chip from a 2.2
