If you are looking for the OEM OS disks, then you will need to identify the specific model of G4 (ie not just "iMac G4"), as many of them shipped with different versions of OS's.....some going all the way back to OS 9.2.

You can look on www.everymac.com to see what the original/shipped OS was, as well as the latest one it can run, for just about any mac ever made....

However, most G4's can and will run at least OS X 10.4 for sure, and many will also run 10.5 nottaproblemo, assuming they have a fair amount of ram, cpu speed, video card, and HDD space to accomodate it. These disks were/are available as retail versions, so they will install on any capable machine...

ps....I ran 10.5 on a Quicksilver G4-(1.6ghz upgrade)/1.5GB ram/Raptor 74/Radeon 9800 Pro for years nottaproblemo 🙂

just let me know if you need more info.....

Yes, Quicksilver can run 10.5.x but unless you have 2 GB RAM might I suggest sticking with 10.4.x instead. 1.5 GB with 10.5 is doable though. If 1 GB or less, stick with 10.4.

Oh and it helps to have a decently fast hard drive. Note the drives are IDE.

Also, run with Adobe Flash deactivated. Flash is one of the major bottlenecks for perceived performance.

P.S. By modern standards, even 10.4 on a 2 GB G4 Mac of that generation is pretty painful. IMO if you really want a meaningful Mac experience, you pretty much need to run an Intel Mac with 10.6 or better, with minimum 2 GB RAM.

I know I am just wanting to play with this computer that was given to me, I really want to get an intel core but right now I can't justify the cost.

Does the computer not have an OS installed on it right now?

Your best bet is to get the retail disc because the restore software will be hard to find.
