Looking for small-ish gaming laptop - Need suggestions

I'm in the market for a gaming laptop, as my new job has me travelling an awful lot, and I can't use my work-supplied laptop for gaming.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of gaming laptops are 17" DTR monsters, which is larger than I want (I'd like to be able to use it in an airplane without causing undue annoyance to whoever might be sitting on either side of me), and while powerful 15" laptops exist, they never seem to have the top end graphics hardware. I don't mind getting a DTR notebook, I just don't want the large footprint, and would prefer that it had a P-M for heat and battery life purposes. (I know battery life with video card running at full won't be great on any laptop, but I'd like to get some useful time out of it if I'm not gaming. Plus, I don't want it to burn through my lap!)

My ideal configuration would run something like this:

P-M based
14" screen, preferably widescreen. 15" or 15.4" suggestions work also, as even in those form factors it seems very difficult to find a gaming machine from a reliable maker.
Maximum graphics card power available in this form factor (If the max available is too low, I may be forced into a larger machine)
Available with a minimum of 1GB of RAM
Reliable company (While I can get a better deal on ODM machines, I'm sure... I'd be more comfortable with Dell covering my warranty)

So, here are my questions:

1. For the Radeons, how do the various Mobility Xn00 lines compare to the Mobility 9700? Is a 256Mb X700 a good card, or is it going to let me down after a year and a half (My goal is for new games to remain playable, at least on low settings, 2-3 years into the life of this machine) I'm seeing the X700 much more often than the X800.

2. Although the prices are way better, I'm worried about ODM machines because I want a good warranty, preferably with accidental damage protection.

What I want is essentially an XPS2 in smaller packaging (Which, for heat issues, is almost certainly impossible), but failing that, would like some suggestions as to the best gaming machines that can be found at 14".

The purpose of this machine will be exclusively gaming and personal use (I have a work laptop already, but it doesn't work for gaming) and my absolute minimal requirements are that it be able to run Everquest2 at moderate settings.

Price is not an issue, as long as it stays reasonable (That is not to say that I wouldn't much prefer to get this for cheap, just that price isn't as important as getting what I need feature-wise).

Off hand, the only model I know of that fits a 14"-15" screen is the Toshiba Tecra M3. It has the option of using a GeForce6600, which is one of the best GPU's you'll get in a small package. The M3 has a 14.1" screen and has all the options you could want: DDR2, 7200RPM drive, high res screen, etc. The only catch is that you have no choice on the battery: 6-cell 4700mAh. That will only get you 3 hours max, not to say anything about playing games.

Unfortunately Dell, HP, Sony, etc don't have anything that meet your needs. I'll look at Sager and some of the smaller companies and let you know if I find anything 🙂

P.S. Feel free to head over to the LaptopLogic Forums for more help! (See link in my sig)

Sager has the following notebook coming soon:
15" SXGA+ Active Matrix Display
Intel® Centrino? mobile technology
Intel® Pentium® M Processor / 533MHz FSB
ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700 PCI-Express 16X Graphics with 256MB DDR SDRAM
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG LAN 802.11a/b/g
Built-in Digital Video Camera
Intel High Definition Audio / 8 Channel external audio outputs supports
Built-in 4-in-1 Card Reader

That might work for you, but my bet is that the 6600 card will offer better performance. We'll have to wait for benchies on the Mobile 6600!

Acer has the Travelmate 8100 series which uses a 128MB X700 PCI-E & your choice of Pentium M CPU's w/DDR2 RAM. It will be pricey though.

Personally, I between these 3, I would go with the Sager or the Toshiba.

I'm actually looking for amore powerful card than either of those offer... I suspect I may be stuck with a larger laptop - though given it's absolutely incredible benchmarks, I think there are far worse fates than being stuck with an XPS2, even though I might regret its size soon enough. The real upside of the XPS2 is that it'll probably be able to manage new games for most of the next three years.

I was hoping that I could find A small P-M machine with either a 256Mb X800 or 6800 in it, but alas it seems fated not to be.

I guess it does provide a bit of an excuse to spend a rather inexcusable amount of money on a XPS2. Ah well... I told myself that I was getting the new lappie as my personal reward for getting the new job. Might as well make it a really good reward!

Well, I wouldn't mind a 14" widescreen P-M notebook with a 6800 Ultra myself...but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I think the 15" models with the X700 or 6600 (Asus, Acer, Toshiba) are the best compromise for size/performance, as long as you can handle lower settings on future games.

Another option for you is the Sager 7620 (probably sold by most Clevo resellers). It's a 15.4" widescreen, but with a desktop P4 (up to 3.8GHz) and ATI X800 256MB DDR3. It still has the weight and battery life of a desktop replacement, but a slightly smaller footprint than the 17" machines.

I think an XPS2 would make you unhappy after lugging it around. It is friggin' big. If you have to drag luggage with you too, I would consider something smaller like the others suggest. It is virtually impossible to find a gaming laptop like you want. I bought a ultraportable Sony with a 12.1" screen thinking it was so small that I could take it anywhere and it would take up little space in my kitchen. Needless to say, it never leaves the kitchen.

Check out Compusa and see if you can buy a laptop and return it if not satisfied within 30 days. Then you can try something like the Toshiba listed above.
