hello, I'm looking for a small and light notebook for school use. right now i have a bulky heavy alienware laptop and i can't carry around to class or the library because it's way too heavy, not to mention it's as loud as a fricking jet engine!! so i need someone that i can easily put in my backpack. i want something under 5lbs and preferrably a smaller screen so that it's around the size of my textbooks. i don't wanna spend over $600 either

thanks

For $600 new you have extremely limited options. There are a few 14" widescreen Acer's on Buy.com for $500 or so. Everything else that price will be 15.4". And at $600 that laptop isn't exactly going to be the cream of the crop.

$600 max? You could: spend about $50 more to get a Dell e1405 (14" wide). Or you could get a Compaq V2000/Z (also 14" wide). Both of them are over 5lb though (about 5.5lb). 12" is probably not happening at $600 unless you buy a used laptop. You could check out the IBM Thinkpad X30 series and X40 series on eBay.

Check out the HP NC4000 series laptops. I have the NC4010 and it has excellent build quality and is relatively inexpensive for a business class ultraportable. As of this posting there was one on ebay for $440 bin, w/1.6 p-m, 256mb, and 40gig hd. Nearly all of these laptops came with a standard 3 yr warranty, and it's easy to transfer.

Hey, those are pretty good deals for a basic computing device! I might get one as an extra beater laptop. The battery life isn't great, but it is well under four pounds sans power adapter, and it's pretty small.

yup, out of all of the laptops I've owned (including my new MBP), my favorite was a loaded HP NC8000 provided by my old employer. It was quick, light, compact, and had an awesome display and keyboard. No issues whatsoever.

so why is it that smaller screens = more $$$?

isn't it supposed to be the other way around?

Miniaturization costs money. It's hard to design things to fit like sardines in a can... or parts in a chassis. It's much easier to get a sizeable 15.4" chassis and toss cheap parts in with little regard for thermals or power usage. OTOH, 17" laptops cost more than 15" laptops because regarding the screen itself, larger screens do cost more.
