In BoomerD's thread: here and in that I found this Link

Does anyone know where I can find some of this:

Any ideas on how much $$$ it will run me for a price about 12 × 9.6?

Thanks,

That is what you call "Perforated".

Local phone book - steel supplier or local steel mill.

Some of the local welding shops / sheet metal shops might have scraps they can sell your for cheap.

Lowes and Home Depot have small quantities of that.
It's with the other sheet metal and angle iron.

McMaster-Carr will have it too.

Looks like speaker grill mesh

Its Perforated Steel, the thicker stuff is used as a pre-filter in industrial applications.

After oil is pumped out of the ground, it has all kinds of dirt and rocks in it. Refineries will run the raw crude oil through perforated steel plates to remove the heavy objects.

Unlike regular filters that are thrown away, the perforated plates are removed from the towers, washed off, and reused.

Get some perforated stainless steel, and it makes a great bar-b-q grill. One guy I know, he bought some 1/4 inch thick perforated stainless steel plates for his grill. Man it worked good.

Wouldn't it have been better if he had gotten cast iron instead? SS doesn't develop the carbonized non-stick coating, IIRC.

Cast iron is not easy to cut with a torch, or weld on. This grill was built in a welding shop.

If you leave a cast iron grill outside, it will start to rust. In a few years the cast iron grill will have to be replaced.

And, the pipe the grill was made out of was stainless. When carbon steel touches stainless, there is cross-contamination and the stainless will start to rust.

I check Lowes and they didn't have it :\ I'll stop by a HD later this week.

McMaster-Carr has EVERYTHING but they want $50 for a small sheet :(

We always used crusher screen for BBQ grills. Inexpensive, (often free) heavy duty material that takes the heat without burning out, and it lasts and lasts.
Available in a wide variety of mesh and wire sizes for just about any application...why it's available for sand screening so beans don't fall through the grate! :p

Look the yellow pages in your area for metal shops.

Often enough you can get a small piece for free or for very little money.

4'x8' 22 gauge often cost me $100, and I can't imagine perforated would cost more. 24 & 26 gauge cost $80 and $75 respectively.

Are you sure you want steel? If so, you better then stainless steel, or else it will rust, even indoors, unless you paint it.

You probably want aluminum for whatever project you are conspiring.

You're right, welding cast iron is very difficult. Cutting it is a different matter... but anyway, I'm just talking about the grates. Are you talking about the whole thing?

The galvanic corrosion will tend to make the less noble metal corrode more, which would be the cast iron, not the stainless.

EDIT: The rust from the iron can stain the stainless, but it's aesthetic, not structural.

We've completed two projects using perf steel. The first project (128 sq ft of perf) we painted ourselves, first a primer coat then paint. The second project (160 sq ft) we had professionally powder coated. Doing it ourselves sucked and the results were less than desired as the billion little holes clog with paint quite easily. Powder coating cost us ~$50 per 8'x4' sheet and took a week from drop off to pick up. These are outdoor screens and are exposed to sun and rain. The first project is showing signs of rust after three years. The second is only six months old and so far no rust. If the rust gets bad enough on the screens we painted ourselves we may pull them off and replace with powder coated stainless.
