Looking for Scanner purchase advise

So I'm in the market for a Scanner in the Epson 1650 Photo or Canon 1240u range. So far it seems that most people suggest the Epson. I'm trying to find out if the negative scanner is worth going with the Epson. Any thoughts?

I have not used the Cannon Scanner but my Dad has a 1650 Photo and it works great. I have a older 836 Epson scanner and have always been happy with it. I think Epson scanners usually get very high ratings. Scanners are one of the best things Epson builds.

I got the canon n1240u and it is a great scanner. Superb size. And only one cable (usb). There is no need for power cable at all.

Great twain software with alot of functions. And actually a working ocr software (omni page pro 9). And great image quality.

I haven't used the latest epson scanners, so I don't know how they are, but I really like my canon scanner.

I have also used canon scanners for computers I have built for friends. n630u, n650u, n670u and n1220u. All of them are doing great.

Considering the price of scanners these days - i would make sure you get one w/ a transparency adaptor for slides & negatives.
Never develop photos at Black's (or whatever) again !

I should also note that I have an Abit KT7A. I have read that there are issues with this board getting power through USB to scanners. has anyone else had this problem?

The canon scanner uses 500ma. I have used the 650 scanner on a abit kt7 and it works great (as long as you have the usb filter driver installed).

I also have a msi k7t pro2a, asus a7v-e, asus a7v-133-c and a asus k7v with the canon scanner. (and with the usb filter driver installed)

No it's just a driver. It can be downloaded from viahardware.com and viaarena. (viaarena.com are wrong when stating that only mvp3 and 4 needs that driver.

There are a few things that didn't work with either of the via chipsets I have used (not ddr), that became working after installing the via usb filter driver version 1.08

This is interesting. I had a USB Logitech Camera that was listed in the Logitech site as having issues with USB due to the Via chipset. Sounds like the problem would have been fixed by this driver. Have you heard if Abit and the rest include this filter driver in their updated MB drivers?
