So my current roommate (whose place I found via Craigslist) is moving out in mid Feb to go to graduate school, so I'm looking for someone to move in.

Any tips on what to look for, questions to ask, etc., so I can end up with someone fairly normal?

If she's afraid of spiders, she'll ask you to kill it for her. Hopefully, she'll be in her underwear at the time. ;)

Typically, at least with normal people, having a roommate means pay 50% less than you would by yourself.

Not really. If you want a 3 bedroom house for yourself, sure. I pay about 25% more to live alone in a one bedroom apartment than I would have to share a three bedroom apartment in the same area. When you consider that most houses I looked at had people paying for full cable packages, that I use very little electricity compared to the average person, and the increased liability you take on living with other people, I come out about even living alone.

edit: I also get to choose my own move-out date. With roommates you may be forced to move sooner than you need to, costing hundreds of dollars or more.

Question I wish I'd asked: Are you currently or have you ever been on any anti-depressants, anti-psychotics or other behavioral modification drugs.

Aside from the rent that's considerably cheaper, $600/month vs say $800-$900+, I get to split utilities + cable/internet costs too, not including not having to buy new furniture and all.

I generally hate the idea of throwing money away on rent, so why not make it cheaper? And unless you're a social hermit it allows you to open up your horizons as well.

Darn it! My kid took my speakers from my computer (his are left at college) - I can't believe this thread made it this far without the craigslist video about the dangers of craigslist ("Med student, no, that was supposed to be meth student. Sorry, it was a typo. Hey, my girlfriend's place burned down so she and her cats are going to be staying with us for a little while.")

I can't believe you didn't post a link.

Rules I can suggest from experiences with friend's roomates:
#1: Do not steal my T-bone steaks from the freezer. They are expensive. And mine.
#2: Do not climb about on the roof. This runs double when it is wet and/or dark.
#3: Do not take my car without permission.
#4: Do not bring the RIAA down on my ass.
#5: I like using metal forks. I'm not going to purchase new cutlery just because the noise metal forks make offends you.
#6: If you cease paying the rent, you are going to be kicked out. This does not mean you can sleep on my porch, either. Even if it's "Just once in a while."

Questions to ask:

(1) Have you now, or ever had, a restraining order placed against you?
(2) Have you ever been evicted?
(3) Have you ever filed chapter 7 or chapter 11?
(4) Have you ever had the feeling that someone is watching you?
(5) Have you ever constructed an aparatus to block out the alien brain probe beams?
(6) What is the first rule of Fight Club?
(7) Do you believe in threesomes?
