I'm trying to develop a system that will allow me to monitor a network remotely, remote login, receive alerts when a component or backup fails, and make sure all software is licensed. I'm sure there is not one app to do all this, but hopefully you guys can offer some suggestions. So far I've looked into N-Able and Spiceworks. I'm trying to keep this fairly inexpensive, so keep that in mind. Please give me your recommendations. Thanks.

Licensing will be the really hard part. How is any application supposed to know whether there are licenses or not if the person can successfully install it.

Yea, the licensing thing will be pretty much impossible. You might be able to find one that will report the keys used on the various machines but not checking to see if they're valid.

We use Level Platforms for all of the other stuff you mention, although we go through a reseller so I dunno how much it would cost to host your own.

when I was working at my old job, we used Kaseya IT Managed Services software for remote monitoring, remote accessing, running scripts, updates, and various others things.

GFI Lan guard is pretty cool, it can scan machines and remove any unauthorized software as well as all the nifty NMS stuff. As long as you don't mind updating it with what computers need what software, anything additional will get removed when it scans. it's not free but I think the price was reasonable and it has a free trial which is kinda nice.
