My father has a HP laptop which must have a 4,200rpm hdd as it's unbearably slow for me when I use it. He probably doesn't know any better and figures it's just normal. In any case, I'd like to pick up an SSD for his bday. He won't care about or notice the difference between a good SSD and great SSD, especially with what he's coming from, so I'd just like something that is reliable and priced well.

I was thinking of the 120GB Intel SSD which is $170 over at newegg. He probably won't need that much space, but it's only $30 more than the 80GB, so it's something he can hold on to for a while assuming it lasts.

Is there anything out there now that has as the (perceived?) reliability of the Intel drives at a better price?

I've had great experiences with Crucial's c300 and M4 drives, but to my knowledge the reliability game starts and ends with intel. I'm sure other people have much more knowledge on it than myself, but i was just lookling at a reliable small SSD for an HTPC im looking at buildilng, and the smaller intel drives are pretty much the only one I'm looking at (at least for now, still on drawing board).

Oh, and stay away from OCZ.

Thanks. I had a 120GB C300 which worked well, although the ThinkPad X201 it was in didn't like it, and would often require a soft reboot as it wouldn't recognize the drive upon start-up. Not sure if the issue has been addressed by Crucial or Lenovo yet.

Other than that it worked without a hitch, but little problems like that have me leaning towards the Intel drives as my father wouldn't have patience for even the slightest problems such as that.

If an SSD will leave him at all cramped on space, you might consider a Momentus XT. 500GB, a good portion of the performance of an SSD, a lot cheaper.

Crucial drives are perfectly fine on the reliability front, IMO (I own two).

A few months ago that would have made more sense, but the XT prices have gone up quite a bit (I paid $99 for my 500GB - they are now $149). If he doesn't need the space, then might as well go SSD. Can't go wrong with Intel.
