Looking for reliable and cheap trac/ pre-paid phone

I bought a boost mobile awhile ago and it absolutely sucked, didn't work anywhere outside of my city.

I heard virgin mobile is good but I'm not sure about the fees.

Does anybody have a pre-paid phone and can tell me exactly what rates they pay.
