Hey guys,

My old laptop is now a doorstop, and my PDA is nice but I want something that I can use on the network to telnet into various Unix and MS platforms. I am very interested in keeping this as small (storage wise) and light (physically) as possible. I prefer Intel chips over AMD chips due to heat, and the system overall needs to be easy on the batteries. I also am trying to get this on the cheap so used will probably be the way to go. I also don't want Windows...Linux fits my criteria perfectly (cheap and smaller than 2K or XP). Plus Linux is easy to upgrade, and would be fun to learn more about. Can anyone recommend any "thin and light" laptops from known manufacturers such as Dell, Compaq, Toshiba etc? I looking for the processor to be in the 600Mhz-800Mhz range with 256MB of RAM. No gaming video here, no dialup modem required. USB would be a big plus.

Thanks for any recommendations you can give!

Not too familiar with laptops, but have you considered one of those "smaller-than-your-average-laptop" Sony VAIO models? I've seen some of them so small you could hold it up in your palm, and they still run Windows XP (I'm assuming since it can run a full-scale desktop OS you should also be able to put Linux on it without a hitch).

VIOS are excellent. I was going to buy one myself but with a sticker price of $1,599 for a P3 1.1 ghz, its not bad, but just a little high for me as i have just upgraded my desktop. Dell has the Lattitude which is very thin and extremely light. Toshiba Proteges are very light as well, i think 2.9 pounds...

Fujitsu's rock in both weight, size, and functionality. Plus the batteries last forever, relative to other laptops. This is basically a glorified PDA.

Fujitsu P2xx Series

Here's a vote for Dell Latitude, although it might be more feature-rich and expensive than you're looking for, check out Dell's site for more info. Got a recommended review from PC Mag.

Have you looked at the IBM X Series? Those puppies are under 4 lbs and come with a 3 year warranty.

The smaller the laptop, the higher the price. The VAIOs are not the only expensive ultra-lights. Toshiba and Dell, to name a few, all have superslim models, but you must be prepared to pay for them.
