Looking for recommendations on a new TV for living room...50 inches ++

I am looking for a new Tv under 2 grand for our living room to mount on our wall in our new home.

I have owned exclusively LCD tv's in the past and am open to all options.

I would like to try to get sometime dialed in this week if possible. 3D isn't needed but if it is available that would be a nice option.

I plan on it being a general TV for cable viewing with streaming options from a media server.

If anyone has any comments that would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Lee

Amazon has the 50" Panasonic GT25 Plasma for $999.98, it's 3D and will have a better picture than most LED LCD's out there.

What brand is the apparent leader or favorite in TV's lately? Samsung, Sony, LG...etc? It seems like Samsung has very good ratings in that price range? I have a toshiba 52 inch right now that works great but is about 3 years old...just curious who holds the crown now...

btw thanks for the link!

Size is (almost) everything. Now that you *can* get a 60" plasma cheap, why not do it? (Unless you're pretty close.)

If size is (almost) everything, people should be getting DLPs instead. You can get an almost top of the line Mitsubishi 73" DLP for $2200 now at Amazon. They also have a lower end model (73638) for ~$1200 (same size).

Or you can get the 54" Panasonic VT25 for ~$2000 at Amazon now. Arguably the best TV available at the moment. The GT is a great TV too, but is only available in 50" and smaller.

Not anymore--They pushed it back up to 2155.84. :| That $2000 was a really good price.

I'm looking for a similar size TV, but I have half the budget... and plasma's most likely not an option for me because of glare. I'm hoping to see some good deals this week with the Super Bowl coming up. If not, I hear April will be the next best time to get a set.

Amazon has the VT25 / 54 inch back down to $2000.00. It's a great price. As for the glare, these models have a real nice anti-reflective screen. I have an '07 panny plasma with a similar screen. It works great in daytime.

The largest TV I can probably get to put on our wall is 55 inches do to space and also I am putting in wall speakers.

seriously from owning a 42" for 5 years. 60" plasma is the way to go. LG makes some beautiful ones. I love my 60PX950 - i do not love 3D but there is no image retention. set it to THX cinema or THX bright room and the calibration is right there. driven with a geforce 430 with 1:1 pixel mapping - all over hdmi. love it.

if you can bump to 60" its a good place to be. 5 years from now we'll think 60 is weak but at lower size screens i would lose 1080p detail on dark high frame scenes. eye balls could not process the data. Being extra large has very little downside imo

Heh, I already think 60 is weak. I have a 62 dlp and think its too small. Really wanting the 73 from tigerdirect or dell for about 1k, but might just have to wait for it...

I was about to link it, but they jacked it back up again. :\ It's like a yo yo effect with them. It was $2000 last time I check at around 1 EST. Sorry Man.

oddly the 55" cheapie took up more wall space than my 60" LG plasma. for some reasons alot of LCD's waste ALOT of room around the frame??! Measure well. I did and i fit 60" in

They sold out as I was looking this a.m. but they have 13 new in stock with a price at under 2000...

reading the reviews I am seriously considering this TV....2000 grand is more than I was hoping to spend but you only live once right 🙂

I got to get clearance with the boss but I might pull the trigger on this one tonight or this weekend.

ok just pullled the trigger on this tv...now I need a wall mount 🙂 Any recommendations?

EDIT: G##D@@@M credit card denies the transaction in the middle of the night...now after hashing it out with them the price bumped up to 2150

I hope they have a good return policy if you can't stand the floating black issue it has, not to mention the rising black issue...

...not that the other competitors don't have their own issues. If you can, waiting for the 2011's would be smart...

Exactly. It's a matter of picking your poison. Overall however, the Panasonic VT series squeaks out the lead for best TV in 2010. As for the 2011 models (VT30), it will almost certainly be out of the OP's budget, so the VT25 is his best bet if he wants a TV now.

Well, I'd say it's the best TV in 2010 if you can stand the issues with it. If you can't stand the issue with it, and can stand the issues the other sets sometimes have (unlike the floating and rising blacks, which the 2010 Panasonic's almost/do all appear to have), the Samsung and LG plasma's are more of a hit or miss situation for their issues - although, pretty decent chance if a Samsung it'll be a buzzer, although, to what degree and to what degree the OP could/would hear it, is unknown.

Again...pick your poison....

my LG has been flawless. everything everyone complains about. buzzing. wierd black levels, image retention. nothing.

coming from LCD i will say the anti-reflective from any plasma is a joke but the brightness more than makes up for that. On a bright reflective day with the windows open the unit is so damn bright it can overpower pure daylight glare except in dark scenes. I usually don't watch tv during the day (work).

I have never owned a plasma TV...and went to about 4 stores to look through what was available currently.

The Samsung 60 LED tv was amazing compared to the others...I did see the GT25 panasonic and that looked great as well, they had it on clearance for 1150...

Can you elaborate on the 'rising black levels' and what that means or what you see and why you wouldn't want that?

Not true. My plasma has barely any reflections.
