literally writing up an ebay auction right now to sell my 74gb raptor as I want the extra $100 I spent on the drive back. the problem is that the drives that I think about buying to replace the raptor with seem to be just as noisey when looking at noise comparison tests.

Another vote for Samsung. My 3 have been exceptionally quiet thus far, with little to no whine.

It actually isn't bad (I'm actually getting used to it) but to be honest I kinda want the money back is I'm trying to sell off stuff to make some extra cash to go on a euro trip this summer. I'm willing to take the performance hit if it means I will have an extra $100 to spend in Amsterdam ;)

Just to give a quick update...

I ended up buying the recommended Samsung and the Hitachi Sata II after selling the raptor. I'm happy to report that both drives are virtually silent and I don't notice any performance difference between the drives. The Raptor is a waste imo

Samsung, but try to get one of the really new ones with a Nidec motor.

I bought a Samsung 120GB SATA drive in July 2004 and it has a Nidec motor. It's very quiet. This month I ordered the same drive. Samsung has since switched to JVC motors for that line, and it's a lot louder.

In the THG link Matthias99 provided, you can see that the Samsung drive they reviewed has a Nidec motor :)

I already got the drives :) I was just giving an update :) The Samsung is definitely quiet. I would recommend. I would have bought another one instead of getting the Hitachi but i couldn't find capacities above 160 for the spinpoint series

Did you get a JVC or a Nidec motor? I'm thinking about buying a new Samsung myself as a storage drive.
