Looking for really good pc speakers

I have a junky set of logitech Z-340 speakers on my pc and want to upgrade these (they are messed up anyways, the sub makes snapping noises) but am looking for something a few steps up in quality.

Who makes a standard sub with 2 satellite type setup or sub and 2 mid sized for desktop type speakers that actually sounds GOOD when listening to mp3's etc, I also have a guitarport on my pc so listening to the guitar playing thru pc is something I am interested in too.

Any suggestions on what is a really good sounding setup?

I was looking at these

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...121122&ATT=36-121-122&CMP=OTC-d3alt1me

but being logitechs like my current logitechs i wondered if they will work for more than a year without having problems like my Z-340's have begun to do..

I don't need to have 5.1 etc mainly just the sub and right left is fine even...

Well he did say "or 2 mid-sized"

That actually opens up options that are much higher sound quality than ANY 2 satellite + sub options available. If powered only, Swan M200s. If you are willing to go bookshelves + amp, then you can find even better options.

AV123 X-LS ($200) + amp would be insane...60-27KH +/- 1.8db. This is like close to DIY quality here.

My home theater stuff here is all Klipsch RF35's front mains, RC3 center, Quintets for surround and their KSW 15 sub, amazing sound from this setup for me so I might be looking into the 2.1 setups they sell here.

Size and Price wise I would like to stay under $300 and I have PLENTY of room on walls and desk so mid sized bookshelf sized speakers are even fine for me since 90% of what I do on my pc is Audio related I don't mind giving up real estate to audio equipment.

Bill 🙂

Klipsch Promedia 2.1 ftw.... you don't want those Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultras anyway... they were inferior to the non-ultra ones.

Klipsch is the best sounding desktop pc speaker system bar none.

I'm using a pair of Alesis Monitors with a spare Pioneer Amp to power my system. Anytime your want to compare horn loaded ear bleeders like Klipsch with mine, be my guest. Bookshelf speakers not designed for nearfield listening + computer use = bad.

I otherwise like Klipsch's promedia line and prefer them over Logisys, but when the price tag gets up around a couple hundred dollars you guys are nitwits for buying this junk. That's when powered studio monitors start coming into play and sound 1000x better.

I have the logitech z-2200 speakers, the model before those in that link, and they are well over a year old and have no issues at all.

I wouldn't say Logitech are "crap" speakers. Yes the Klipsch are gonna be better but the price tag is also higher (generally). The logitechs are very decent speakers. I like them because I get good sound and it fits my budget 🙂 The low-end logitechs like the z340's are nothing like their higher-end speaker sets.

Basically, if you have the $$$ go Klipsch, if you don't, logitech is a good alternative.

Price range? If you want something that sounds capital GOOD you gotta be willing to spend a decent amount of cash. Klipsch multimedia speakers are reasonable, but then again there's a shitload better.

I am sorta thinking of leaning towards a good set of bookshelf speakers and an amp even, (have plenty of room on walls and desk area), would like to stay at or under $300 range (size is NOT an issue) just lookin for decent sound for my audio applications (guitar port replicator, sound forge, recording music, listening to mp3's and such..).

If I go with a home amp and two mid sized (6-8inch woofer bookshelfs) I won't need a sub right? And if I go that route just use the out from pc to input on amp then wire the speakers from amp etc... seems pretty straight forward, anyone here do that (using a home amp and speakers vs pc setup)...

$300 will get you a pair of KRK RP5 powered monitors. They will slaughter any PC speaker system on the planet.

The problem with PC speaker systems is they use extremely cheap and undersized drivers, then try to fill in the lower end with a poor 6" paper driver stuffed in a shoe box to qualify as a sub.

Thanks to accoustic and electrical modeling software most of the better PC systems are pretty flat in terms of frequency response and behave well at moderate volumes. Even the small logitechs sound pretty good - provided you don't move your head much.

Two 5-6" drivers in the form of a higher quality bookshelf or monitor will easily provide better bass response than a typical PC speaker system sub-woofer.

My buddy who is a musician swears by these speakers, I remember the yellow woofers too...

Seeing that I will be using these for music and even guitar thru my pc guitarport application (and have plenty of desk space here) I might try a set of these...

Just to clear things up, they are self powered so I don't need an amp to use with pc direct from sound card right?

What all would I need to buy to hook them up from straight from the pc here, guessing a single 1/8th stereo jack that splits to right and left inputs (rca or ? ends for speakers) then each speaker is self-powered so beyond that I would be set right?

Looked at the pdf of theirs and got more confused with all the terms and info there (pin 1 2 3, balanced unbalanced, all examples there look pretty detailed with boards and multiple setups) my application would be simple straight from pc to speakers, so I am hoping I wouldn't have to mess with any of that other stuff (pin 1,2,3 etc) cuz it was confusing to me.

You'd probably be best running RCA (unbalanced) to them. You would need a sound card with balanced output to make full use of their input, but that's not necessary. For the 'stereo' jack, it's actually a 1/4" connection, but then again it's not a stereo plug you need (TRS) but a mono (TS) plug, with one ring. Again, I'm pretty sure the KRKs have RCA input so you won't even need the inline adapter.

Alternative to the KRK, there are Samson Rubicon, Behringer Truth and Yorkville YSM models at around $300, and more if you look around. Which of them would be best is difficult to say, but one thing I'm confident in is that just about any monitor will be better than any bookshelf/amp combo you'd be able to find for that price. Bass response on any ~$300 monitor will be limited, so you would benefit from a subwoofer, however given the extent of their frequency response it's not essential.

If you'd be willing to spend around $450, I could personally vouch for the Yorkville YSM1p. Frequency response down to 40Hz -3dB which further more neglects the need for a subwoofer, but more importantly all around sound quality is exceptional.

You're right about that. I use the RP5s with my Yamaha S90 ES. They are wonderful.

Depending on your desk space and budget, there are a number of good choices.

It's still hard to compare to the 5.1 sound of the Klipsch systems. I've had one and have tried to buy something else, but when I go to the shops and test out other speaker setups, none of them sound as good as my 4 year old Klipsch 5.1 Promedia, with the exception of the newer Klipsch 5.1 Ultra.

For only 99 smackers ($89 for the same thing in silver), the Klipsch 2.0 speaker system is nice. No subwoofer, but each speaker has a full tweeter, midrange, and woofer. Entirely respectable sound quality:

As always, GO TO THE STORE AND LISTEN. Test drive, as it were.
