I have an older system - thunderbird - motherboard is an albatron KX18D pro (similar to an MSI kt3). The system has a ati 9800 or a ti 4200 (I forget which) graphics card and one disk. Recently the system has started rebooting or crashing so I figured as a random guess it is the PSU (which is an antec TRUE 430 since these psu were known to go bad and I dont' have any way to test the psu).

So Can someone suggest a good replacement PSU (perhaps something that has reasonable efficiency). I guess something in the 400 to 500 watt range should be more than enough power. What I do not remember is if all PSU will work with the older motherboards or if they changed the specs hence this request for suggestions - I posted the details in case there is an easy way to determine the problem with the system -- I should note that the system is at my parents house (passed it along to the my dad when I upgraded) and I don't have easy access to the system (2000 miles away) but can swap the psu when i visit them in a couple of weeks...

I believe you've got one of the old motherboards that powers the CPU from the 5v rail, instead of the 12v rail, like all boards now do. If I were you, I'd buy this PSU. It's got plenty of power for that system, and is so cheap, it's almost free. You can't beat that.

It has a fair number of negative reviews - is there something that would be very reliable ? I don't mind paying a little extra for it to be hassle free - after all if it fails I'll have to fly 2000 miles to fix it :(

Yea the st400 is what I will go with - inexpensive even with $10 shipping - seem to have enough power on the 5 rail (though I'm a bit concern) and well reviewed.
