Looking for PS3 game recommendations

I'm a PC gamer who got a PS3 for blu-ray, and now I'm considering getting a game or two.

I'm an older gamer, I hate twitch games. I picked up one, Big Little Planet, and while I really like the creativity, the 'time your jumps' gameplay is more than I like of that.

I'm not sure what the ideal game would be - something distinct from the PC though probably. On the PC, I like RPG's, MMORPG's, some turn-based and realtime strategy...

Also creative titles... I'm looking forward to 'the experiment', for example.

I'm probably looking for a couple 'game of the year' contenders that fit my tastes (or undiscovered gems). Not a lot to go on, I know.

I could just go by gamerankings high rankings, but the top rated game is 'Zelda Ocana'of Time', and, well, maybe it was great then, but I found it nearly unplayable.

(It's several years old, I know, but so are some games that are still fun).

It's a rent, not a buy. Very, very short.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is a great PS3 game. Not a whole lot of replay value though. I own it, wish I had rented it.

Once you get your "console hands" (took me 12hrs of CoD:W@W to get them) i'd recommend Dead Space

Fallout 3 is pretty good on the PS3 (unless you have already played it on the PC).

If you want PS3-only games - MGS4 is really fun. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought, and it is "console" through and through.

Edit: SP

Blu-Ray Titles: Ratchet & Clank Future, Uncharted, and Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds

IMO, all three of those are fantastic games. And Uncharted and R&C both have sequels coming this fall. So if you like them you won't have to wait long for the next installment.

PSN Download Titles: Super Stardust HD

I love Super Stardust HD. IMO, it is the best dual anlog shooter around. And with the download titles it's hard to go too wrong given the price. If you end up liking SSHD then you may want to consider Blast Factor. IMO, it may fit into your "hidden gem" category. I think it's a great game, especially after the Advanced Research add-on. It also makes one of the best uses of the tilt controls I've seen in any game. Simple, intuitive, and doesn't feel like it was tacked on.

Download the Valkyria Chronicles demo. It's a tactical wargame with RPG elements.

You might like Disgaea if you like the grinding aspect of RPGs.

Sadly, no PS2 backwards compatibility means you're cut off from dozens of other good JRPGs.

Thank you to everyone who has posted a suggestion. I'm still looking through them, but MGS 4 looks good so far. (I have Fallout 3 for PC).

Damn, all the games I have can be had on PC (UT III, COD4, Red Alert 3, Oblivion, Orange Box)

All except for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which pretty much beats any racing game you will play on PC...well... at least GT5 will when that comes out :D

Almost every game mentioned in this thread is a twitch game. The OP doesn't like twitch games.

Non-twitch:
Pixeljunk Monsters (Tower defense game)

and that's all I can think of. Every other game/demo I've tried requires some reflexes.

Overlord: Raising Hell on PS3 has good controls, is funny, and isn't much of a twitch game at all.

MGS4

I have a wii, ps3, 360. Rarely use them, mostly for my girlfriend. I prefer pc games, but MGS4 on PS3 got me totally into it. Great game.

Are you joking?

I know I'd rather look at a nice pair of jugs than Kratos's pecks.
GoW is the better game series though.

I guess Fallout 3 is probably the best to get. Vary heavy subject matter but it's a deeply engaging RPG/Shooter. Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Resistance 2 if you like shooters. All PS3 exclusives. For turn based strategy pick up Civilization: Revolution or Pixel Junk Monsters (from the PSN Store). I can't really think of any conventional RTS games on PS3, or at least any good ones. Consoles are not ideal platforms for that.

Some people mentioned Valkyria Chronicles and Overlord Raising Hell.

A long while back, I had downloaded and installed both demos. I was very surprised. Both were outside my Genre preference and I had very well enjoyed both demos beyond my expectations.
Had I not had higher priority games to get, I would have gotten those in a heart beat :)

Oh, and for those comparing Overlord to GoW. All I can say is that the difference is like in between the sun and the moon.
Overlord is designed for people who want to take a break from the suspense of games like GoW and what have you. It's supposed to be the kind of games you sit down on a nice afternoon and have a couple of chuckles without getting yourself too deep into the game.
I really like it's style, very relaxed and comic too :)
