Haven't been on top of the HDTV market lately, I'm wondering what HDTVs give the best bang for buck performance. Depth of the TV isn't a problem - it doesn't have to be flat or anything.

Please, also advise me on matters regarding cabling, DVD players, etc.

Thanks,

In order from best to worst:

best quality: Plasma, DLP/LCD/CRT (each has different problems)
best bang for buck: DLP, LCD/CRT (depending on size), Plasma
best video cables: HDMI/DVI, VGA, Component, S-Video, Composite, CATV (*shudder*)
best audio cables: Optical/Digital-RCA, Analog RCA/PC
best time to buy: a conspicuously indefinite time in the future
best video resolutions: 1080p, 720p, 1080i, 720i, 480i

People would likely provide more information if you would describe how your HDTV will be used. Do you have an audio receiver? A stand-alone DVD player? What size TV are you looking for? How much are you looking to spend? etc.

I need a complete surround sound setup too, but that's a different story and probably doesn't belong in this thread, although you're welcome to help me if you want to.

I'm basically putting together a home theatre completely from scratch. Going to be lots of movie watching/gaming going on. As for a budget, not quite sure, feel free to make any recommendations.

AVSFORUM has HDPC advice.

I'm partial to LCD TV's for their resolution.

I like my Syntax Olevia 27in widescreen as it has DVI and VGA inputs.
(Also I got it for $500 recertified at NEWEGG.)

I use an ATI HDTV Wonder Remote edition for Over the Air HDTV.
(I got it for $87 shipped *used)

For surround sound I've got a Logitech Z-something 5.1
(35wattx5 Subwoofer is 100watt)

I replaced the sattelites with Sony 3-ways in front and
Polk M-10's in the rear. The logitech drives them well
enough for home theatre or games on PC.

Sound card is Audigy ZS analog out.
(Need the Audigy for games effects or would switch to my Chaintech 7.1
which had slightly better stereo sound)

I am poor and cheap so your mileage may vary.

We just got a 50" Pioneer Elete plasma. It was a lot of money but will last for a LONG time. We did a lot of recearch and it was totally worth it.

Personally, if I was looking for bang for buck over pure quality I'd say go for a Mitsu DLP.

I managed to worm some sort of a budget out of him. He says about 2500-3000 for a TV, and no more than 1k for all the audio.
