Looking for new Point and Shoot

Looking for a new point and shoot camera (and/or a place to buy it) so I figured AT would be the best place to get some info ASAP.

I'm replacing an older (8yrs?) old 3.1MP Sony. I forget the damn model number (something with an 80 in it). It served it's purpose but I know it absoultely sucks in today's world (hell it was $800 when I bought it)

Any suggestions out there? I'm not looking to break the bank here either. I'd like to get a nice SLR if/when the finances allow so for now I just need a PnS to take pictures of the kids etc.

I would get a Canon S2 or S3. You can get one cheap all day long, and it has 12x optical zoom.

I guess I was hoping for something a bit more compact (should have specified that in the OP) so that if/when I get a SLR i kind of have the best of both worlds available to me.

I saw this on another board I post on. I had the SD300 and it took killer pics, I can imagine this is no exception since it's newer.
